This is an exciting opportunity to join Medtronic's Structural Heart and Aortic operating unit to work with a passionate team focused on early phase technology strategic exploration, exploratory proof of principle work and product development excellence. This role serves the long-term needs of multiple therapy areas across the portfolio including transcatheter aortic valve intervention, mitral & tricuspid valve intervention and aortic endovascular repair.
In this role, the successful candidate will understand the IP goals/needs of SH&A and develop plans to enable and support IP generation from conception to patent application, which involves strategic planning and cross-functional collaboration. The successful candidate will have both depth and breadth in the technical and therapy aspects across Structural Heart and Aortic. Good understanding of IP development process and methodology are required, along with a strong interest in learning patent law concepts, IP strategy, and using IP to achieve SH&A’s business objectives. Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills are a must. Overall responsibility will be for engineering program management of IP development and creation for SH&A operating units, which involves chairing weekly team meetings assessing status, milestones, advising and partnering with IP attorneys in SH&A, and completeness of plans with regular program updates to business stakeholders and technical leadership.
+ High visibility role with R&D, IP, and OU leadership to influence the IP strategy of multiple high growth therapies and lead the engineering organization’s execution of IP strategy.
+ As a member of the Research & Technology team, engage in technology roadmap creation and execution strategies to facilitate fast learning and experimentation in transformational technology assessment.
+ Represent engineering organization to OU IP legal team, and collaborate closely with OU IP legal team, to ensure engineering IP activities are strategically aligned with overall OU IP strategy.
+ Actively identify, develop, and recommend new IP-related initiatives that add value to the IP process and/or strategy, and bring to OU R&D and IP leadership for alignment.
+ Synthesize multiple information sources to develop recommended actions and priorities.
+ Work with R&D leadership team to lead, plan, and implement IP incentive and recognition efforts across the OU to foster a culture of IP creation.
+ Work with R&D project teams to harvest patentable innovation through understanding of development programs, collaboration with team leaders, and attending technical reviews.
+ Interview engineers and technical staff and observe early-stage innovation reviews to identify protectable innovation.
+ Facilitate internal patent review board meetings and planning to help manage the submission process from disclosure to final acceptance by IP Legal.
+ Ensure follow up with contributors to revise high value submissions through to application completion.
+ Collaborate with our Patent Attorneys and engineering team to review and prioritize submissions based on portfolio and innovation strategy.
+ Assist inventors in completing and submitting invention disclosures, patent applications, and related paperwork. Review relevant materials for disclosure and application, including drawings, and double-check for accuracy as needed.
+ In collaboration with OU IP Legal, develop and deliver IP education sessions and material
+ Work closely with OU R&D and IP leadership to identify meaningful metrics and data to assess IP processes.
**Must Have: Minimum Requirements- To be considered for this role, please ensure the minimum requirements are evident in your applicant profile:**
+ Bachelors degree required.
+ Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience at the Engineering Program Management Level.
**Nice to Have:**
+ Degree in Mechanical, Materials, Chemical or Biomedical Engineering.
+ Master’s degree in Business (MBA).
+ Project Management Certification is a plus (PMP, SMC, CSM, DASM, PMI-ACP).
+ Proven leadership experience organizing and directing multiple teams, delegating tasks and responsibilities.
+ Demonstrated aptitude for assessing emerging technologies.
+ Demonstrated business acumen, executive presence, and communication skills.
+ Proven skills in quantitative analysis and data-driven decision making.
+ Demonstrated skills in influence and project management.
+ Experienced in intellectual property fundamentals and strategic planning.
+ Ability to understand complex technologies and clinical applications to facilitate invention assessment process
+ Strong interest in [learning / deepening knowledge of] patent law concepts, IP strategy, and using IP to achieve SH&A’s business objectives
+ Proficient communicator to engage technical discussions and achieve business requirements in global environments.
+ Advanced written and verbal communication skills in English.
+ Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
+ Proven Project Management applicable methodologies and business acumen.
+ Experience with conducting strategic brainstorm sessions and ideation activities
+ Self-starter and driver – able to execute effectively with strategic mindset.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$179,200.00 - $268,800.00
This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).
The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others)
