Primary Role This position oversees all aspects of the Corporate financial operations including planning, analysis, and reporting processes for American Water. Responsible for leading the business planning and reforecasting process, financial and management reporting activities, management of internal controls, financial analysis and modeling. This role is a key strategic partner in driving growth for the organization and executing on corporate strategy through providing critical financial insights to leadership while ensuring compliance with financial regulations and maximizing profitability. This position works closely with other leaders within the Company (both at the Corporate and at the State Level) to gather and analyze data at a Corporate Level and turn this data into information to be used to drive informed decisions at the Executive Level. This role includes being a liaison with State FP&A and functional leads communicating, integrating and collaborating to ensure corporate deadlines, processes, and ad-hoc requests are met successfully with respective groups.
Key Accountabilities Ability to translate complex financial information to various audiences including State and Executive Leadership. Oversee annual American Water budgeting process and long-term planning including preparation and consolidation of business plans, forecasts and financial models to support strategic decision-making to achieve overall company targets. Lead monthly and annual financial reporting activities including management reporting, analysis, and forecasts, variance commentary and overall financial performance analysis. Validate the performance of the company’s annual performance plan and long-term performance plan. Analyze complex financial information and reports to provide accurate and timely financial recommendations, summaries, variance drivers. Review and support quarterly and annual 10-Q, 10-K work efforts and Investor Relation preparation related to quarterly / annual activities. Support C-Level interaction with external audiences including presentation preparation and related analysis. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and execute strategic financial plans aligned with the organization's overall goals. Build and manage a strong team of finance professionals, including coaching, succession planning, etc. Support Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance controls assigned to the team. Knowledge/Skills Demonstrated outstanding leadership, relationship building, communication and presentation skills. Strong interpersonal skills with an emphasis on knowledge sharing and team building. Strong leadership skills, including ability to work effectively with all levels throughout the organization and across functional lines to achieve business goals. Strong organizational and project management skills with ability to multitask, prioritize and delegate as needed. Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills. Understands the mission, vision, values, and strategies of American Water. Advanced knowledge of US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Advanced MS Excel and PowerPoint skills. SAP and Oracle Planning experience preferred. Experience/Education Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, business or a closely related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced degree or CPA, CMA or CFA preferred. 7 years of accounting/financial related experience required. 3 years supervisory experience preferred. Regulated utility experience preferred. Travel Requirements As necessary, less than 5%. Work Environment Professional office environment.
