THE DAY TO DAY...

New Product Development: When a new product, or a revision to existing product is created, the Manufacturing Engineer (ME) analyzes the changes and determines what process modifications and tooling may be required.  The ME will also work with design engineering giving design for manufacturability feedback on the front end of new product developments

Process Changes: The ME is responsible for researching, developing, and implementing all process additions/changes to support new product introductions, upgrading sunsetting equipment, and process modifications to support capacity growth and efficiency gains

Continuous Improvement: A constant review of current processes and equipment where new technology or improvements can be made. The ME actively looks for opportunities to improve existing operations and makes an active effort to keep up to date on the latest manufacturing technology available

Setup/Revise Process Data: In the AS/400 ERP system, the ME is responsible for setting up routings, work centers, tasks, material usages, and labor times to manufacture various parts. This may involve performing time studies or producing prototype parts to analyze and validate process data

Automation Integration:  Research, plan, and implement automation to existing processes that yield the greatest payback to the business.  The ME will work with design engineering to assist in designing products for automation and be responsible for implementing automation into manufacturing.

Capital Investments:  Draft capital expenditure (CAPX) business cases and present them to leadership for approval.  This typically involves working with contractors, obtaining multiple quotes, calculating return on investment, generating the timeline for project execution, and understanding the investments' impact on staffing, processes, and material flow

Study/Review Existing Process: As part of the continuous improvement program, the ME will design and execute experiments/tests looking to improve process efficiency. This could be a new tool, a change to a build order, or adding or deleting a task or step.  Sometimes this is in response to a suggestion or an incident (such as a safety near miss)

Coordinate Process Trials: All process changes and new product introductions have a process trial step as part of the change/launch. This involves validating the process change before implementing it into production.  The ME is responsible for managing the process trial and adjusting as necessary ensuring the process change is integrated into production effectively.  This involves working with multiple departments such as tooling, quality, operations, and design engineering

Research New Tooling/Process: Research and develop new innovative ways to manufacture our product.  Benchmark how other companies process similar parts to find the best solution for our needs.  This is usually done in response to an identified vulnerability in our process (such as an older machine breaking down) or as part of a process change/new product launch

Training and Documenting: Working with the manufacturing teams, ME’s will train operators in particular tasks and operating equipment. They may also document a process by creating a training aid/standard work for a process

Problem Solving: The ME will be involved in safety, productivity, quality and future planning events.  ME’s work on solutions to technical related issues. They can also be utilized to assist in technical areas such as helping diagnose a bad weld or layout a process
