Sr. Network Engineer (Hybrid)
Job Description

The Network Engineer III manages the purchase, installation, and support of network communications, including LAN/WAN systems. The Engineer is responsible for evaluating current systems and works on complex problems where analysis of situation requires in-depth evaluation of various factors. The Engineer plans large-scale systems projects through vendor comparison and cost studies; using expert knowledge of LAN/WAN systems, networks, and applications.  The Engineer operates under general direction and provides work leadership and training to less experienced network engineers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Diagnose and troubleshoot infrastructure issues (Routing, Switching, WAN Optimization, Load Balancing); assist other teams in troubleshooting system issuesDesign and architect new deployments which adhere to best practices and standard methodologies; review existing network design for improvement and upgradeCreate network documentation, including advanced Visio drawings and network mapsWork with Managed Service Providers to ensure SLAs are met; review proposals for new services to validate scopeParticipate in on-call rotation, independently resolving most issuesPerform packet inspection and evaluation using standard tools (Wireshark and OPNET)Participate in expert-level interaction across functional business areasReview and assess new technologies for consideration and appropriateness

QUALIFICATIONS

Advanced Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, AS/400 and PeopleSoft skillsSolid understanding of Cisco Routing and Switching including VLANs, Ethernet, WANs, LANs, Spanning Tree, Port Channels, Access Control Lists and industry best practicesStrong knowledge of layer 3 routing including OSPF, BGP and MPLSIntermediate understanding of the 7 layers of the OSI network modelUnderstanding of IPv4 networks and subnet masks; ability to calculate CIDR boundariesStrong troubleshooting skills with routers and switchesComfortable with GUI interfaces as well as a CLI interfaceSME on at least one advanced topic: WAN Acceleration, Load Balancing, BGP, etc.Demonstrated interpersonal skills, ability to effectively present information and training; respond to questions across all levels of the organization and cultivate relationships with internal and external customers to achieve business objectives

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or engineering; and 5-7 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
