Sr. Opto-Mechanical Engineer
At Endress+Hauser, progress happens by working together. As the global leader in measurement instrumentation, our ~17,000 employees shape the future in the field of process automation. Whether developing and realizing new technology as a team, collaborating to build instrumentation, or strengthening vital relationships with countless global industries, we work to create trusted relationships that help everyone thrive. As a family-owned company, we look beyond short-term moves and work to create a vision that is forward-thinking for our people, our clients, and the world at large.
We are looking for a Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer to join Endress+Hauser Optical Analysis, the global leader in Raman spectroscopy, tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS), and quenched fluorescence (QF) instrumentation for laboratory, process, and manufacturing environments. Our laser-based analyzer systems perform high-performance chemical composition and concentration measurement of all phases of matter in any installation environment.
What is the role about?
We are seeking an experienced Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer with a strong background in both optical and mechanical engineering. This role will focus on designing and developing Raman spectroscopy analyzers, their components, and process interface components such as optical probes, with an emphasis on manufacturability, quality, and efficiency.
Which essential functions will you perform?
Design and Development: Design for Manufacturability: Create precision opto-mechanical parts and assemblies for use in Raman spectroscopy analyzers and optical probes, ensuring designs are easy to manufacture and assemble while maintaining high quality and performance. Work with manufacturing and industrial / automation engineers in transferring designs into production. System Design and Integration: Design and integrate opto-mechanical, electronic, and off-the-shelf components into Raman spectroscopy analyzers and optical probes. Ensure seamless functionality and performance by considering system-level interactions and dependencies, including thermal effects on the system. Develop and implement system-level design strategies that enhance overall product performance and reliability. Material and Process Optimization: Select materials and manufacturing processes that enhance product robustness and reliability under varying environmental conditions. Simulation and Analysis: Utilize advanced simulation tools to optimize designs for structural integrity, optical performance, and thermal performance. Perform stack-up and tolerance analysis to ensure fit and function under worst-case conditions. Prototyping and Testing: Build and test prototypes to validate design concepts and ensure manufacturability and efficiency before production. Technical Drawings and Documentation Detailed Drawings: Generate comprehensive fabrication and assembly drawings, Bills of Materials (BoMs), and inspection documents. Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles where needed. Clear Documentation: Document designs for production through detailed drawings and work instructions, ensuring clear communication of design specifications. Includes executing engineering change orders. Troubleshooting and Legacy Support: Product Support: Troubleshoot and resolve issues with existing products, focusing on improving manufacturability and quality. Project Management Leadership and Collaboration: Lead and collaborate on engineering projects, coordinating with cross-functional teams to ensure project success and alignment with manufacturing capabilities. The duties above describe the general nature and level of work being performed in this job. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties; additional responsibilities may be assigned, as required, by management.
What qualifications are needed?
BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or related discipline. A minimum of 7 years’ experience with design and development of precision optical and mechanical instrumentation. Expert-level CAD user. Proficiency with simulation tools for structural and optical analysis, including the Ansys suite of tools including Zemax OpticStudio. Understanding of machining and sheet metal fabrication processes to design manufacturable parts, with particular emphasis on stainless steel and aluminum alloys. Understanding of 3D printing technologies and materials. Knowledge of GD&T principles Strong knowledge of standard engineering documentation procedures (e.g. EOs, ECNs, etc.) Candidate should be a self-starter, possess excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
What qualifications are desired?
Familiarity with general electrical and laser safety standards for industrial instrumentation. Familiarity with hazardous area classifications and certifications related to industrial instrumentation. Familiarity with instrumentation electronics Experience with Solid Edge, and/or PTC Creo CAD software. Experience with Agile PLM, and Syteline / SAP ERP systems.
