Sr. Press Officer
Job Description The New York City Comptroller’s Office works to promote the financial health, integrity, and effectiveness of New York City government, in order to strengthen trust, secure a thriving future for all New Yorkers, and build a more just, equitable, and resilient city. Led by an independently elected citywide official, the comptroller’s office provides checks and balances needed to hold City government accountable for budgeting wisely, investing responsibly, operating efficiently, acting fairly, living up to its obligations and promises, and paying attention to the long-term challenges we face together. The Communications Team supports the work of the Comptroller’s office to secure a thriving future for all New Yorkers by disseminating information to promote public accountability, highlighting key initiatives, and advancing the conversation on key policy objectives. The Team provides the public-facing voice of the office, working with the press to share information, using digital tools to communicate directly with New Yorkers, and creating communications products to explain the work of the office. The Senior Press Officer will execute the office’s communications strategy and conduct media relations in coordination with the Press Secretary and Director of Communications; Duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following: - Execute communications strategies to establish the Office as a trusted voice on government and fiscal transparency, oversight, and accountability. - Draft, edit, and distribute press releases and statements, talking points, and responses to incoming press inquiries on a wide range of issues. - Develop and manage strong working relationships with reporters and editors. - Pitch and place stories and profiles on key projects and announcements from the office. - Work closely with other communications staff and issue experts from the Audit, Claims, Contracts, Policy divisions on a wide range of issues pertaining to the city and the work of the Comptroller’s office. - Plan and coordinate logistics for press conferences and events, including staffing them as needed. - Monitor news and social media pertaining to New York City and issues pertaining to the work of the office of the Comptroller to turn into rapid response. - Work with team members to align press and digital strategy. - Perform other related duties and assignments as may be required. Qualifications A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and at least two (2) or more years communications experience in a government, advocacy, political, non-profit and/or multi-language media settings.
