Sr. Prototype Engineer

Role Summary The Sr. Prototype Engineer will provide early product development assets to teams within Rivian to further production designs and decisions. This includes full vehicle design and build for testing applications at Rivian or even to show new products like the vehicles displayed at the R2, R3, and R3X unveil in March of 2024. In addition to product and brand development assets, this group is also involved in fitting existing vehicles with features to showcase the capability of the product ( The Rebelle Rally, MWCT safari vehicle, The Nature Conservancy to name a few). Our group features engineers, designers, fabricators, machinists, technicians, and program managers focused on efficient design and high-quality, quick duration builds. We support production development and manufacturing through our prototype development but are not release responsible for production parts. Responsibilities Ability to make vehicle system, and part level engineering decisions to create products. The ability to contribute to and sometimes lead a project with a defined scope. Identify and help to solve problems within projects and processes to meet company or department objectives. Understanding of prototype manufacturing processes and the ability to push traditional fabrication methods to create production representative or purpose-built solutions. Design for Manufacturing (DFM), design balances functionality and manufacturability, designs ready for CNC Machining, Additive Manufacturing, Laser Cutting, or Fabrication. Frequent communication with shop personnel during the design process to understand in-house capabilities Understanding of system or part validation/analysis and the ability to interpret data to make defensible engineering decisions. Confidence in engineering decisions to challenge assumptions of peers / colleagues / existing processes in pursuit of better products. Maintaining teamwork mindset / understanding the functions and capabilities of the team around you to minimize downstream challenges from your decisions. Qualifications The ability to influence people around you to get clarity on decisions at department levels. A background in engineering (bachelors in engineering required) A fundamental understanding of the development process and the ability to bring technical knowledge to identify and solve problems. The ability to meet deadlines and motivate people to support the tasks required for Special Projects activities. Knowledge of vehicle milestones, timelines, and the overall development process An understanding of production, prototyping, and fabrication process and the time, cost, and quality tradeoffs The ability to learn, think creatively, and solve problems. The ability to stay positive, provide and receive clear information and feedback to achieve the best quality possible.Rivian Internal Effective communication to convey not only issues, but positive influence and recognition of your team. Pay Disclosure Salary range for California Based Applicants: $107,800-$134,800 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).
