Lucid is looking for a talented and motivated Senior Technical Specialist of Engineering Tools Research and Development. Reporting to the Director of Engineering Data and Software Tools, the Senior Technical Specialist of Engineering Tools R&D will deliver radical improvements to Lucid’s Engineering Product Development in speed, quality, and cost. This will be accomplished by evaluating the latest technologies in AI, computational sciences, engineering design, analysis, and manufacturing by assessing needs, building functional prototypes, implementing digital products, and deploying these to engineering teams and related stakeholders across Lucid.
Responsibilities Near-Term: Working with the Engineering Tools/PLM, Lucid Strategy, and IT teams, assess the landscape of tools and technologies available and in progress, incorporating: Current Lucid Engineering Tools suppliers (e.g., Dassault, Autodesk, MathWorks, ANSYS, etc.) Non-Lucid suppliers Academic and research institutions Open-source software alternatives to address goals (e.g., cost and scaling objectives) Work with stakeholders and the Engineering Tools/PLM team to collect and analyze engineering, design, and manufacturing tools needs across Lucid. Use this information to drive a roadmap of: 3rd party tool adoption Customization (as required) of existing tools Creation of completely new tools Collaborate with 3rd party engineering software providers (e.g., Dassault Systèmes, Autodesk, ANSYS, MathWorks, etc.) to understand current capabilities and influence their product roadmaps. Support the identification, evaluation, and collection of stakeholder feedback regarding 3rd party tools to assess compatibility and utility for Lucid. Develop an R&D strategy component for an overall Tools/PLM strategic multi-year roadmap, incorporating investigations into (but not limited to): Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Chat-based assistants Generative AI AI agents Rule-Based Systems/KBE Topology Optimization/Generative Design Mid/Long-Term: Grow and manage multi-project teams and ensure alignment with Lucid’s goals: Grow a small team, recruit, mentor, train, and develop top talent in AI and machine learning for engineering design and analysis. Develop and oversee multiple AI and Digital Engineering tools/products timelines, deliverables, and team performance. Coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of digital solutions into the company’s processes and systems. Collaborate with executive leadership to align R&D initiatives with business goals. Qualifications Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field 10+ years in automotive (preferred) or other design-, engineering-, and manufacturing-oriented industries Program and/or project management experience (preferred) Strong communication skills for collaboration within the team, across cross-functional teams, and with management Approachable and comfortable with developing and maintaining mid/upper-management and user-level relationships Prior people-management experience required Effective ability to delegate tasks and translate corporate/managerial goals into actionable directions Strong, systematic problem-solving and data-driven decision-making skills Knowledge of Engineering Software Tools Required: Prior PLM and 3D CAD experience – 3DExperience (preferred) / ENOVIA, CATIA V6 (preferred) / CATIA V5 Additional Experience (Preferred): Prior experience with other related enterprise systems (e.g., ERP, MES, etc.) Manufacturing modeling – DELMIA 3DExperience (preferred) Surface design tools – Alias/ICEM Math modeling – MATLAB/Simulink FEA/CFD – SIMULIA, ANSYS, LS-DYNA, Altair HyperWorks Electrical design tools Task management and collaboration tools (e.g., JIRA, Confluence, etc.)
