Staff Applied Scientist, Routing

We're Cruise, a self-driving service designed for the cities we love.

We’re building the world’s most advanced self-driving vehicles to safely connect people to the places, things, and experiences they care about. We believe self-driving vehicles will help save lives, reshape cities, give back time in transit, and restore freedom of movement for many.

In our cars, you’re free to be yourself. It’s the same here at Cruise. We’re creating a culture that values the experiences and contributions of all of the unique individuals who collectively make up Cruise, so that every employee can do their best work.

Cruise is committed to building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment, both in our workplace and in our products. If you are looking to play a part in making a positive impact in the world by advancing the revolutionary work of self-driving cars, come join us. Even if you might not meet every requirement, we strongly encourage you to apply. You might just be the right candidate for us.

The Routing team at Cruise is responsible for navigating AVs to their destination quickly and safely in an urban environment. The Routing algorithm identifies the ideal route, optimizing across many dimensions such as safety, time and customer experience. When the AV cannot complete a maneuver due to a road closure or safety concerns, the routing algorithms provide alternative routes.

The Routing teams work closely with our Prediction and Planning partners to translate route directions into road trajectories that safely navigate around nearby agents (i.e other cars, pedestrians, animals). The Routing team also depends on high-fidelity maps w/ real-time information (i.e what other AVs observe) and simulation tools.

What you’ll be doing:

Design, develop, optimize and deploy real-time routing algorithms for autonomous vehicles, ensuring efficient and safe navigation in urban settings.

Lead strategy for ambitious multi-quarter projects that advance the state of the art in routing and autonomous vehicles.

Utilize high-fidelity maps with real-time information, leveraging data from other AVs and external sources to improve navigation accuracy and reliability.

Develop and implement simulation and measurement tools to test and validate routing algorithms under various traffic and environmental conditions.

Analyze performance metrics and data to identify opportunities for algorithm improvements and enhancements.

Enable other engineers on the team to be more effective through design and code that is easy to extend and contribute into

You should apply for this role if you have the following qualifications:

PhD/Ms in routing, graph theory, multi-agent optimization, robotics or a related field OR 5+ years of industry experience solving routing problems which do not have readily-available solutions

Considered one of the technical leaders of the department who guides current and future technology choices

Track record of driving projects from start to completion, including conception, problem definition, experimentation, iteration, and publication or productization.

Expertise in deploying routing algorithms and models into real-world environments

Have a deep understanding of the business and operational impact for different technology tradeoffs, and able to balance effectively based on company’s need

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams.

Strong programming skills in C++ and/or Python.

Passionate about self driving car technology and its impact on the world!

Bonus points:

Familiarity with autonomous driving technologies

Experience with machine learning techniques (i.e Graph Neural Networks) and their applications in routing.

Experience with high-performance and real-time algorithm development

The salary range for this position is $183,600 - $270,000. Compensation will vary depending on location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. You may also be offered a bonus, long-term incentives, and benefits. These ranges are subject to change.
