Staff Attorney - Residential Real Estate Loans Investments

Neuberger Berman, a leading global asset manager, is seeking a Staff Attorney to join our dynamic Legal and Compliance Department in Chicago. As a Staff Attorney, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that our Residential Real Estate Loan Investment Team operates within a robust legal framework, facilitating seamless and compliant investment operations.

The Residential Real Estate Loan Investment Team is engaged in purchasing residential mortgage loans and other real estate-related assets, managing loan portfolios, and trading activities associated with these assets. The team assesses and manages investment risks, performs due diligence on potential acquisitions, and optimizes loan portfolio performance, including through the use of leverage and securitizations.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide comprehensive legal support to facilitate the whole loan trading process, ensuring the accurate execution and delivery of trade documents, notices, and related materials.

Oversee the organization of all fund-related entities, manage secretary of state filings, formations, annual reports, and management of registered agents, and ensure effective internal record-keeping

Manage and update all legal databases and other records related to fund documents, agreements, assets, and corporate structures.

Support the due diligence process for loan acquisitions, focusing on title and survey issue resolution and regulatory compliance.

Draft, review, and negotiate contracts for loan acquisitions, sales, and servicing agreements, ensuring compliance and protection of the firm's interests.

Ensure all investment activities adhere to applicable laws and regulations, including state and federal mortgage lending and servicing laws.

Identify and mitigate legal risks associated with residential loan investments, including foreclosure processes and loss mitigation strategies.

Provide legal support in handling disputes or litigation, including foreclosure proceedings and other legal actions, related to the loan portfolio.

Qualifications:

Juris Doctorate

1-2 years of experience as a lawyer

Experience with real estate and lending is ideal but not required.

Basic knowledge of corporate law, including corporate governance, compliance, and regulatory requirements.

Experience in reviewing, drafting, and negotiating contracts and agreements.

Demonstrated ability to provide high-quality service and build strong relationships with clients.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

Well organized with strong attention to detail.

Capacity to manage and prioritize multiple projects and deadlines.

Proficient in the Microsoft Office 365 suite.

Compensation Details

The salary range for this role is $110,000-$130,000. This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future. This range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in Illinois. An employee’s pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, any collective bargaining agreements, and business or organizational needs. This job is also eligible for a discretionary bonus.
