**Position Overview:**
SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is upgrading the soft X-ray free electron laser as part of the LCLS-II-HE Project. The Alignment Engineering Group at SLAC is responsible for aligning all the beamline components for LCLS-II-HE. Very high precision measurements are required to meet tolerances on component alignment. Applying the newest techniques and laser tracker instruments is required to make the electron beam trajectory straight and to allow the machine to operate with minimum beam loss. The Alignment Engineering Group is seeking an engineer to assist with the alignment tasks.
**Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.**
**The primary responsibilities of the successful candidate include the following:**
+ Perform network measurements, component alignment and field data collection with laser trackers, digital levels, total stations and GPS.
+ Analyze the measurements and determine the position of the components and the uncertainty of the placement.
+ Work closely with technicians to take and organize the measurements.
+ Work closely with mechanical engineers to determine parameters for the alignment of the devices.
+ Work closely with line management and the system physicists to make sure the final data set is compatible with the requirements.
+ Be responsible for timely calibrations of the related instrumentation.
+ Assist in carrying out other alignment group tasks.
**To be successful in this position you will bring:**
+ The candidate must have B.S. in geodesy, geomatics, surveying or related technical field, and two years of relevant experience in accelerator alignment.
+ Proficient in operating Laser Trackers, working with Spatial Analyzer, least squares adjustment.
+ Knowledge of alignment theory and fiducialization procedures.
+ Have the discipline to make accurate production measurements on a strict schedule.
+ Ability to work on multiple tasks.
+ Demonstrated ability to work safely in a team environment and to communicate with others.
**Preferred Qualifications:**
+ A Ph.D. degree in geodesy / geomatics engineering or experience typically representative of post-doctoral, early career geodesist will be a plus.
+ A good knowledge of alignment network analysis.
+ Experience using the Spatial Analyzer software.
+ Experience with handling strong magnets.

_The expected pay range for this position is $116,000 to $170,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs._
