The Role:
General Motors is at the forefront of the transformation of automotive with the electrification of our portfolio and the development of leading-edge central compute and autonomous capabilities. Our ECU Mechanical & Thermal Design team is a dynamic, high-energy, and innovative group focused on developing mechanical and thermal design of next generation ECUs (Electronic Control Units). The team is responsible for developing Mechanical and Thermal design of new next gen ECU designs, with math, CAD and analysis. The team also reviews and approves production ECU design changes.
We are seeking a high-performing Staff Mechanical Design Engineer interested in leading the in-house development of GM electronics design. You will be responsible for the mechanical design, development, and review of Electrical Controllers, for our next generation SDV (Software Defined Vehicle) architecture. You will be depended upon to build strong partnerships with internal and external customers.
What You’ll do:
Execute mechanical design of ECUs per program timing, leading to successful launch of the product
Design mechanical components including castings, injection moldings, stampings, seals, electrical interface, PCBA mounts, connector interface and fastening
Perform design calculations, GD&T and tolerance stacks
Create 2D-CAD, 3D-CAD and lead CAD reviews with stakeholders.
Perform FEA (Structural, Vibration, Mechanical shock, Fatigue), Modal analysis.
Develop analysis and test plan for new design, perform proof of concept tests and analysis
Lead prototyping and testing, analyze test data, and make necessary adjustments to mechanical designs.
Work with electrical engineers and PCBA designers to integrate components into electro-mechanical systems.
Build partnerships with functional peers internally within GM and externally at Tier 1 suppliers to align on ECU design per development cycles.
Develop virtualization technologies that help accelerate and de-risk product development
Communicate design progress and risks to stakeholders and customers.
Drive Mechanical design strategy for the enterprise.
Solid organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Additional Job DescriptionYour Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
BS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent engineering degree
10+ years of engineering experience in design and development of ECU's (Electronics control units)
Exceptional collaboration and teamwork skills; demonstrated ability for working across functional and organizational boundaries.
Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling (NX and Teamcenter preferred, but not required), 2D drawings, tolerance analysis, design for manufacturability, and assembly.
Proficiency in CAE skills (ANSYS, ABAQUS & Genesis).
Strong analytical skills and engineering fundamentals in solid mechanics, material science, heat transfer, mechanism design, and manufacturing
Hands-on experience engaging with electronics manufacturers.
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)
Master’s degree/PhD in Mechanical / Electrical Engineering
Mechanical design of PCBAs, computers, or automotive electronics
Strong understanding of thermal solutions and their application.
Knowledge of vibrational and structural analysis
Experience with ASME Y14.5-2009 dimensioning & tolerancing standards.
This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Mountain View, CA or the Warren Tech Center (Warren, MI) three times (Tue., Wed., Thurs.) per week, at minimum.
This job may be eligible for relocation benefits.
A company vehicle will be provided for this role with successful completion of a Motor Vehicle Report review.
The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant in the California Bay Area which includes the following counties: Marin, Contra Costa, San Francisco, Alameda, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz might be paid in accordance with the California law.
The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of the California Bay Area.
The annual salary range for this role is $137,000 - $214,300. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
