Staff Mechanical Engineer

10x is seeking an outstanding individual to join its growing Engineering and Product Development team in developing new technologies, devices and instrumentation for breakthrough next generation sequencing (NGS) applications. These instruments may consist of a combination of motors, actuators, pumps, valves, relays, regulators, cameras, sensors, and temperature controllers and will process various types of biological samples.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the design, development and implementation of technical solutions for complex projects, involving multiple domains. Participate in project planning and scheduling.  Participate in all phases of product development, including requirements definition, concept generation, detailed design, manufacturing process development, assembly, integration, verification, and validation testing. Manage a large scope of mechanical design work including possible partnership with external partners. Create new product architectures for next generation instruments Conceptualize and examine complex electro mechanical assemblies, create theoretical models, conducts empirical confirmation & performs computer assisted simulations Design and Develop mechanical parts and assemblies, with careful consideration for mechanical design, kinematics, materials (plastics & metals) and stress analysis Create product functional and design specifications. Performs DFMEA on parts that are designed Working collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams to define requirements for new and current designs Study and test product designs Identify and research new vendors/processes to manufacture components Assist in initial design of fixtures and processes to assemble components Create new product assembly instructions Develop and perform component verification testing and product validation testing Support production of final product by troubleshooting process and component problems Provide engineering support to Manufacturing, NPI, and Service to facilitate transfer of designs. Document, prepare and review patent submissions Assess field reliability data and improve existing product designs as necessary Shepherd projects through the design control process (design specification, design review, risk analysis, etc.), and support New Product Introduction personnel in initial builds (procurement, assembly, troubleshooting)

Required Skills and Background

BS/MS/Ph.D. in mechanical engineering with a minimum of 10 years relevant industry experience Systematic aptitude with an emphasis on theoretical fundamentals High Proficiency using software like 3D CAD to design mechanisms; SolidWorks preferred (3D design & surfacing), Finite Element Analysis (such as SolidWorks Simulation) Project Management experience a plus Machining, casting, sheetmetal & high volume injection molding experience a plus Comfortable in examining electrical assemblies and sensors Comfortable with all phases of the product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debugging, verification, qualification, and transfer Excellent communication and documentation skills Comfortable operating machine shop equipment Proven understanding of component selection criteria, and design for reliability and manufacturability Process development and assembly instructions Experience with instrumentation in medical devices, biotechnology, motion control, automation or robotics

Desired Skills and Background

Experience with at least two of the following areas: control systems, system integration, mass flow and thermodynamics, microfluidics systems, injection molding, optical systems Proficient in SolidWorks and EPDM/PDMWorks Experienced in generating mechanical drawings Proficient with analysis methods (FEA and tolerance analysis) Knowledge of and experience with electronic document control systems (ECO process) Can independently identify design problems and come up with suggested solutions Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team including chemistry and molecular biology Knowledge of a variety of manufacturing techniques and processes Experience with injection molded part design Experience operating machine tools Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English Ability to communicate in a clear, concise, personable manner High energy and interest in working in a startup environment Hands-on, can-do approach Knowledge of software programming or electrical engineering design
