Staff Nurse (Acute) RN - (Chemotherapy Nurse)

The Registered Nurse will work under the supervision of the Unit Manager following the American Nurses Association (ANA) standards of practice, and code of ethics within a Patient and Family Centered Care Model. 

 

Education, Work Experience and Licensure

•    Graduate of an approved Nursing Education Program.

•    CPR- Required

o    ACLS – Recommended (See specific unit requirements)

o    PALS – Recommended (See specific unit requirements)

o    TNCC - Recommended (See specific unit requirements)

•    Holds a current State of Ohio RN License.   

•    Previous experience preferred.

 

ONCOLOGY INFUSION NURSE ADDENDUM

 

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES

 

1. Provides direct nursing care for Hematology/Oncology patients including assessment, treatment, education, and follow-up.

 

2. Administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, general infusions, fluid and electrolyte replacement, blood product administration and other oncology treatments as prescribed.

 

3. Perform education with patients and families while utilizing the teach back method to confirm understanding.

 

4. Precept students and new staff members.

 

5. Participate in community outreach and prevention programs to promote the center.

 

6. Maintain survey readiness for Joint Commission and the Commission on Cancer.

 

7. Provide supportive services/ resources to families to facilitate their treatment plans.

 

8. Perform telephone triage to facilitate patient care.

 

9. Assess, access, and maintain vascular access devices.

 

10. Perform phlebotomy procedures to include starting peripheral IV’s and drawing blood from midline catheters, peripherally inserted central catheters, and ports.

 

11. Ability to work independently and successfully in groups.

 

12. Knowledgeable of chemotherapy, biotherapy and immunotherapy specific policies and procedures.

 

13. Ensure proper patient consent is obtained prior to initiating treatment.

 

14. Other duties as assigned.

 

Additional Job Specifications

 

1. Education:

 

A. Licensed Registered Nurse

 

2. Experience:

 

A. Minimum of one (1) year nursing experience in acute care or emergency medical setting with Oncology experience preferred.

 

B. Experience with Venous Access devices (VADs) and IV skills

 

C. Certified Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy Nurse designation via the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) within 6 months of hire

 

3. Continuing education:

 

A. Minimum of twelve (12) hours of Oncology specific continuing education hours per year.
