Job Summary:
The Registered Nurse (RN) I is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated time frame. The RN I provides care to patients via the therapeutic use of self, the nursing process, the environment and instrumentation, and other health care team members.
Essential Responsibilities:
+ Performs assessment/data collection in an on-going systematic manner focusing on physiologic, psychosocial, cultural, spiritual and cognitive status as well as nutrition, pain, patient/family education, family involvement and patient advocacy. Identifies patient/family learning needs and implements appropriate measures. Documents patient care and unit activities in a timely, accurate, and concise manner. Demonstrates sound knowledge base and actions in the care of a designated patient population.
+ Formulates a goal-directed plan of care that is prioritized and based on determined nursing diagnosis and patient outcomes. Establishes priorities or patient care based on essential patient needs and available unit resources of time, personnel, equipment, and supplies. Evaluates effectiveness of care given by health care team members.
+ Implements care in a thorough, skillful, consistent, and continuous manner. Performs efficiently in emergency patient care situations following established protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons, and documenting events. Demonstrates an awareness of and sensitivity to patient/family rights, age specific needs, cultural and ethical beliefs. Demonstrates knowledge of legal issues, including patient confidentiality and risk management in all aspects of patient care and unit functioning. Demonstrates knowledge of and applies safety principles as identified within the institution.
+ Demonstrates a service philosophy in all interactions with patients, families, and all members of the health care team. Establishes effective working relationships with members of the health care team, patients, and families. Acknowledges staff rights and cultural and ethical beliefs.
+ Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for own professional practice. Participates in unit and Department Performance Improvement activities as directed. Participates in nursing research activities as requested.
+ Participates regularly in staff development activities for unit and Department of Nursing personnel. Delegates appropriately and coordinates duties of health care team members. Provides data for staffing decisions and demonstrates flexibility in the resolution of staffing issues; demonstrates flexibility when floating to other units upon requests. Identifies and solves problems effectively. Utilizes effective communication methods and skills, following lines of authority, as appropriate.

Qualifications
This position allows applicants to apply to all hospitals participating in the March 2025 cohort of the Nurse Residency Program. Anticipated participating hospitals include: Antioch, Fremont, Fresno, Manteca, Modesto, Oakland, Redwood City, Richmond, Roseville, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose, San Leandro, San Rafael, Santa Clara, Santa Rosa, South Sacramento, South San Francisco, Vacaville, Vallejo, and Walnut Creek.-The intended start date for the March 2025 Cohort is March 10, 2025.

Before applying, please read all the following information carefully; this position is only for nurses with no prior inpatient (acute care) experience as an RN.-
Initial Hospital Placement: During the screening process applicants will have the ability to indicate which group of hospitals (or a single hospital) they wish to apply to. Upon hire, residents will be hired into one of the hospitals within that group or a single hospital preference; preferences of candidates are considered when determining placement. Residents can change hospitals after working a minimum of six months at Kaiser Permanente.-
Initial Training Schedule: Will be provided at the start of the cohort start date, training schedules are aligned to assigned KP RN preceptors. The training schedule will be different from the resident’s permanent schedule. Residents will train on Day, Evening, or Night shift; specific workdays and hours will be provided at the program start.
Independent Practice: Once the resident completes their precepted period (training), they will move to independent practice; at this time, residents will receive their initial permanent position. --
Initial Permanent Position: Initial permanent positions may be on Day, Evening, or Night shift, and will be in the same hospital as their orientation (but unit may change if necessary based on available open positions at the time of placement). Positions will be a benefitted position with a minimum of 40 scheduled hours per pay period. Following placement, residents can change unit, shift, schedule, hours, or hospital after working six months in total at Kaiser Permanente through the contractual bid process as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.
Program Components:-
+ Clinical teaching from our team of trained Kaiser Permanente RN Preceptors.-
+ Weekly learning activities based on our nursing transition to practice program.
+ Classroom education courses taught by Kaiser Permanente Nurse Educators that incorporates simulation, skills labs, and lecture.
+ 12-month Professional Development Program.-
+ Requires the completion of an Evidence-based Practice Project.-
Program Time Commitment:-
+ Minimum of 6-month commitment prior to being eligible to bid into a different Staff Nurse II position than the initial permanent position the resident is placed in.
+ Attendance at all clinical and classroom activities is required, and course locations may vary and may require travel which is reimbursed per the collective bargaining agreement.
+ Commitment to not schedule any time off (with the exception of protected leave such as FMLA or other protected leaves) during the course of the first six months of the program.-
+ You cannot transfer to other Staff Nurse 1 positions as a Staff Nurse 1 (including ED Residency).

Travel:
+ The medical center you apply to will be your primary training location for clinical immersion.-
+ During your training you may be required to shadow, visit, or spend limited time in another Kaiser Permanente department or facility.
Professional Development Program:
+ Attendance, and completion, of the professional development program is mandatory for Nurse Residents.-
+ Nurse Residents will be required to fill out anonymous surveys to measure your transition-to-practice experience. This will occur upon hire, 6 months, 12 months, 24 months, and 36 months.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience
+ Knowledge of the RN scope of practice.
+ Demonstrated commitment to Service Orientation (members, staff, providers).
+ Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills (in English).
+ Good interpersonal skills.

Education
+ High School Diploma/GED. Graduate of an accredited registered nursing program and completion of the current hours required by the BRN of RN student clinical experience. OR Graduate of registered nursing program and either 1) 2000 hours of RN experience in clinical area of specialty from a licensed acute care facility within the last three (3) years; or 2) graduate of an accredited licensed vocational nursing program that includes clinical student experience in acute care and has worked 2000 hours as an licensed vocational nurse within the clinical area of specialty within the last three (3) years.
License, Certification, Registration
+ Registered Nurse License (California) required at hire.
+ Basic Life Support
Additional Requirements:
+ Graduate from a nursing degree program within the last 12 months. Students pursuing entry level Master's programs are eligible.
+ ACLS, NRP, PALS, chemotherapy certification, or other requirements may be required depending on the unit the resident is placed on.
