This position leads and supports testing on new products to market for our Sports Medicine business and ensures that clinical needs and quality are met for our customers. Staff Engineers in the R&D Test group critically apply engineering design principles, develop novel applications for standards and procedures, efficiently drive resolution of critical and highly sensitive issues/test failures, and provide solutions to optimize product design. They demonstrate competency in applying core engineering concepts from several engineering disciplines and the ability to set direction for testing in their technical area(s) of focus. As part of the test team, they are ultimately responsible for design verification – the quantitative testing of the technical specifications of the product. We are a close-knit team with a variety of experience and technical specialties. If you’re the type of person that has the magic ability to break things – we want you!

What You Will Do

Coordinates testing of new products/components/designs and/or design changes to existing products. May be accountable for testing on an entire platform or system/family of products. Leads the advancement of division-wide testing or test methods (Comprehensive, Efficient, Accurate Use-Case Simulation, Repeatable and Reliable).

Designs and develops repeatable test methods of high complexity (i.e. conditions to replicate are multi-factored, and fixture mechanisms perform multiple functions). Standardizes and develops testing framework or methods for multiple test applications and/or products. Considers long term usability by designing methods according to the limitations of certain components based on their principle of operation.

Contributes as a technical lead to multiple projects and/or a project of higher complexity. Influences new product development, implements process improvements, demonstrates thorough understanding of test practices/procedures and proactively provides guidance to other engineers on design controls and test lab practices/procedures.

Performs testing as needed. Coordinates with technicians, supervisors, managers, engineers, scientists, and outside test houses to ensure timely and high-quality test execution. Maintains a strong relationship with the cross-functional product development teams to drive high quality products that are launched in an efficient manner.

Understands the user needs, surgical application and clinical risks of the product under test as well as its interactions with other products in a clinical setting. Collaborates at the divisional level to ensure product interactions are clearly identified.

Uses intuition & technical knowledge to efficiently drive resolution of critical and highly sensitive issues by intelligently narrowing the scope of the investigation. Determines root cause(s), reproduces defects, and provides solutions to optimize product design.

Performs and teaches others about statistical data analysis to identify areas of variability, determine sample size, and analyze test data. Identifies additional statistical methods for exceptional cases as needed. Proactively provides technical mentorship to test team, cross-functional teams and the division. Writes high level technical documentation that is used for influencing key decisions.
