Staff Researcher (Term) – PGM-Free Fuel Cell Electrocatalysis
The Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a term staff researcher to design, develop, synthesize, and evaluate platinum group metal free catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction in proton exchange membrane fuel cells as part of the US DOE ElectroCat consortium (electrocat.org). In addition to the evaluation of the activity and stability of electrocatalysts in aqueous electrolyte, the researcher will also perform diagnostic studies of fuel cells and electrolyzers using a variety of electrochemical techniques. **Position Requirements** + This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in chemistry, materials science, mechanical or chemical engineering at the Ph.D. degree level with 3 or more years postdoctoral experience in the application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience in the areas described in the job description + Comprehensive knowledge of the design and synthesis of platinum group metal free electrocatalysts, including inorganic and organic material synthesis used as catalyst precursors + Comprehensive knowledge of fabricating low temperature fuel cells and electrolyzers, the factors that influence their performance and durability, in-cell diagnostics to determine sources of beginning-of-life contributions to the performance, and the sources of performance loss with time + Comprehensive knowledge of electrochemical techniques and their implementation in both aqueous electrochemical systems and in operating devices. These techniques include cyclic voltammetry electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, as well as rotating ring-disk electrode measurements for aqueous electrolyte evaluation of materials + Excellent and effective written and oral communication skills and the demonstrated ability to work as part of a collaborative multi-institutional team + Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork RD2: Bachelors and 5+ years of experience, Masters and 3+ years, or PhD and 0+ years, or equivalent **Job Family** Research Development (RD) **Job Profile** Chemistry 2 **Worker Type** Long-Term (Fixed Term) **Time Type** Full time The expected hiring range for this position is $90,063.00 - $143,010.27.
