Staff Writer, UVA Health Development

As part of UVA Health Development’s communications team, the Staff Writer will assist a world-class academic medical center in achieving its strategic and philanthropic goals through effective donor communications. This individual will write and edit content for print and digital fundraising collateral, draft compelling stories for UVA Health’s donor publications, develop major gift proposals, and assist in the creation of other print and digital media that excites and inspires donors and prospects to support UVA Health’s clinical care, leading-edge medical research, exceptional educational programs, and community outreach. Additionally, this individual will assist in drafting speaking points and presentation materials for philanthropic events, developing scripts for video content, selecting and coordinating photography and graphic design, and managing the production of donor publications, collateral, and media.  

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop and pitch story ideas; interview faculty, staff, and donors; and write and edit articles for UVA Health Development’s print and digital publications, PULSE and Investing in Hope.Write and edit major gift proposals in collaboration with development officers and UVA Health faculty and leaders.       Develop content for fundraising collateral, including case statements, white papers, brochures, event invitations and materials, and slide presentations to support philanthropic initiatives and goals.Develop and edit video scripts for campaign initiatives and draft speaking points for leadership as needed.Write and edit content for UVA Health Development’s website and other online media channels.Collaborate with partners in communications and marketing across UVA and UVA Health to raise awareness of philanthropic priorities and impact. Ensure donor communications and publications adhere to UVA and UVA Health style and brand standards. Assist the UVA Health Development communications teams in developing internal communications, key messages, and templates to guide development officers in their donor communications.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.Five or more years of professional experience in fundraising or marketing communications or a related field.Excellent written and verbal communications skills and a proven ability to convey scientific and technical information in an accessible manner for lay audiences.Demonstrated comfort and acuity in interviewing and building relationships with experts and leaders in their fields.Experience writing in a variety of styles and voices and crafting compelling stories and narratives.Ability to provide developmental editing and copyediting support.A demonstrated interest in healthcare, health science, and medical education and a willingness to quickly learn and develop deeper knowledge about these fields.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.Experience writing for donors in a healthcare, academic, or nonprofit context.Experience working in a complex organizational environment and/or familiarity with an academic medical center setting.

LOCATION

The UVA Health Development Office operates within a distributed teams model for work, offering a flexible and hybrid work space. While this position is based in Charlottesville, VA, we will consider qualified candidates who live within a reasonable driving distance of Charlottesville with the expectation that they would travel to Charlottesville frequently and as needed for meetings and events. All team members must have access to and maintain a secure home office environment with high-speed internet service and work collaboratively with others using a variety of technologies and tools. Reservable space in a shared office is available to staff while working in Charlottesville, VA. Depending on the type of position and work performed, or as deemed by a manager, some positions may be required to work intermittently in a shared office space.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $58,000 - $65,000 / year, commensurate with education and experience. This position will not sponsor for work visas. PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
