Job Description Summary
The Staff Writer is primarily responsible for contributing copywriting and content writing for a variety of mediums. This position works closely with the Director of News Publications and collaborates with an editorial team to produce news stories, web content, social media posts, and other print and online marketing and communications content for the Office of University Communications.
Job Description
Reporting to the Director of News Publications, the Staff Writer will contribute to the editorial content for University Communications electronic, print, social media and multimedia news formats including the Penn Today daily news website (https://penntoday.upenn.edu/) ; a companion Penn Today email newsletter (https://penntoday.upenn.edu/newsletters/sign-up) that aggregates news across the University for campus and external audiences; upenn.edu, the homepage for the University; and other websites and print publications.
Job Responsibilities:
+ Report and write news articles and feature stories of varying lengths.
+ Oversee the sourcing and maintenance of the Penn Today events calendar on the Penn Today website and in the daily and weekly newsletters.
+ Update and maintain web copy on upenn.edu, Penn Today, and a variety of University Communication’s managed websites.
+ Write Instagram, LinkedIn, and other social media posts that summarize news content.
+ Assist with the creation of new websites, including content development, image selection, and web layout.
+ Work with various University partners to gather and update information and create compelling web content for upenn.edu.
+ Assist with web analytics and reporting.
+ Assist with editorial calendars, project planning, and other marketing and communications initiatives.
+ Assist with writing video scripts.
+ Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
+ Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 years of experience in writing, digital content creation, journalism, publications, copywriting, or some combination thereof.
+ Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills.
+ Demonstrated experience in writing and content development.
+ Demonstrated experience with content management systems. Experience with Drupal a plus.
+ Good organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize and work on tight deadlines.
+ Experience with Wrike, Canto, Google Analytics, and MailChimp a plus.
