Job SummaryUnder the direct supervision of the Supervisor, Surgical Processing and Support Services and/or the Supervisor, Surgical Processing, the Sterile Processing Apprentice will gain knowledge in all areas of the Sterile Processing Department. The apprentice will successfully complete the University of Akron program and pass their CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) test within the first testing window after program completion.

                         

Job Details

Responsibilities:

Maintain good standing in the University of Akron Sterile Processing Certification program by maintaining good attendance and punctuality and completing assignments. Become familiar with all areas of sterile processing  and portions of the Surgical Suite, i.e., decontamination, assembly area-sterilizing, house table and OR instrumentation, sterile storage, running, case cart picking, pack rooms, and equipment testing.Become proficient with the identification and inspection of all instrumentation to recognize missing parts or malfunction.Assists with collecting and cleaning instruments and equipment after use on patient procedures.Become familiar with departmental standards/guidelines/policies and procedures to be able to assemble instruments and equipment properly.Assist with wrapping or placing equipment or instruments needing sterilization in containersIdentify and use  all methods of sterilization available in the Sterile Processing/OR department, and become proficient in completing  the appropriate documentation required for the sterilization procedure.Become familiar with SPD inventory processes and assists in maintaining an adequate inventory of instruments, equipment, and supplies and assists with checking for outdated supplies where indicated.Assists with department cleaning on a regular basis.Assists with running equipment to ORs as needed.Complies with the medical center's attendance standards.Attends and Achieves 100% attendance at all mandatory in-service programs, both departmental and hospital wide.Completes mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department specific competencies and requirements. Maintains applicable certification.Follows system and department policies and procedures with special attention to attendance and punctuality, confidentiality, dress code, display of the ID badge and safety.Other duties as assigned

Education:

High School Diploma or GED required

Languages:

Must to able to speak and understand English

Certifications:   

None required to begin Apprentice role

Complexity of Work:

Communicates effectively and can read, write and follow oral and written instructions.Possesses the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.Courteous and customer-oriented exhibiting Service Plus standards at all times.Able to work cooperatively with co-workers and OR personnel

Work Experience:

Sterile Processing experience is preferred.Surgical Technician experience is preferred.Working knowledge of Operating Room instrumentation is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to perform duties while standing, sitting, stooping, and reaching for prolonged periods of time. Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.Ability to lift and carry items weighing 25 pounds on a continual basis; ability to push, pull, and navigate carts weighing up to 100 pounds.Possible exposure to biological and chemical contamination.Manual dexterity sufficient to perform basic functions of position day to day instrument counting, sorting and assembly. Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range.Must be able to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors to utilize color-coded systems used for instrument identification. All applicants will be required to be prescreened for color blindness by our Occupational Health Department.
