Position: Office of Multilingual and Multicultural Education, ESOL Instructor Position Reports to: ML Family Resource Specialist team Pay: BTU rate $56.81 Position Duration: 2 days a week, each day for 2 hours, for a total duration of 10 weeks, a total of 40 hours during the school year 2024-2025. The total payment to the teacher is $2,272.40, plus 10 hours per teacher preparation time, with an additional payment of $568.10. Location: Mattahunt Elementary School/TLA ( Mattapan) Dorchester Waymark Seventh-day Adventist Church (Dorchester) Islamic Mosque (Roxbury) Virtual via Zoom or East Boston General Responsibilities and Goals: Position overview: The ESOL program of the Office of Multilingual and Multicultural Education is designed to develop parents' English language proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing while providing parents and caregivers with information and resources about their vital responsibility in shaping the lives of their children by providing learning opportunities across academic, parenting, social emotional and content areas. In this position, the ESOL classes are among many classes in which we support our BPS parents and families. Instructors educate BPS parents and families by offering English language reading, speaking, and listening skills. Instruction is targeted to limited English-speaking BPS parents and families. The instructor will also guide parents and families to meaningfully participate in their child’s education at the school level. RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach ESOL skills to participants (up to 20 BPS parents and families) at varying levels while integrating core skills needed for English language learning. Customize instructional materials by building on own training and experience to create high-quality lesson plans for instructing BPS parents and families in English as a Second Language, using an integrated and relevant, student-driven curriculum. Use ESOL texts, teacher-made materials, and the English for New Bostonian curriculum. Assess student readiness to take the BEST exam and other English fluency tests and coordinate with the coordinator. Keep BPS parents' and families' records and data according to funders’ requirements and students' and staff' needs. Assist with the recruitment and intake assessment of prospective BPS parents and families. Maintain a class attendance record and contact absent BPS parents and families to encourage attendance and participation. Attendance will be taken daily, and an average attendance of 90% will be maintained. Maintain appropriate, relevant documentation, including but not limited to promptly submitting payment forms to the Office of English Learners. Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all participants’ identities and personal data. Ability to provide services in a manner sensitive to the backgrounds and cultures of program participants EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS: ESL Certification • Minimum three years of experience teaching ESOL skills to adult students. Master’s degree and MA Teacher Certification preferred. Experience with ESOL teaching strategies. Experience in differentiated instruction, project-based learning, basic literacy, and ESOL instruction. Experience in BEST testing, competency, and portfolio standardized assessments. Experience in curriculum planning and development. Excellent interpersonal skills, including collaboration with staff, students, and others around program issues and teamwork.
