Structural Engineer

Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS), is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, engineering, and technical fields as part of our staff augmentation team supporting the Department of Energy at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) located in Upton, NY. AIS has an established history of contributing to the success of our customer’s mission.

Successful candidates will be employees of AIS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel in direct support of our Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) customer which manages BNL. Though employed by AIS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratory. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by AIS.

Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.

Job duration is projected to be a 24-month period of performance with the preferred candidate working a hybrid (on-site/remote) schedule with on-site work performed as determined by BSA Technical Leads. There is potential for an authorized remote work schedule with occasional travel to the Lab as required.

AIS is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to provide expertise in support services including a structural analysis of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) tunnel to evaluate projected dead and live loads. The successful candidate requires functional knowledge and specific capabilities in the area of piping supports, cable tray mounting and corrugated steel pipe structural analysis. The successful candidate should be able to perform duties with general direction and be able to work independently and collaboratively toward design and technical solutions. The successful candidate must have strong verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with diverse staff including engineering, maintenance, research operations, and others.

Responsibilities

Develops a structural analysis to reconstitute the design of the existing RHIC tunnel in accordance with BSA procedures and processes for calculations and analysis. The structural analysis shall determine the wall stresses in the existing RHIC tunnel structural steel sections based on existing live and dead loads and compare to the allowable wall stresses as defined in the construction code American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and applicable American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards for corrugated steel pipe and pipe arches.

Consults with BSA and Architect-Engineering Firm (A-E) engineers and designers on the design and mounting of new cable tray assemblies, piping and applicable collateral loads to the RHIC tunnel walls and foundation.

Consults with A-E engineers on the design and installation of tunnel penetrations and tunnel reinforcement modifications.

Updates the structural analysis of the existing RHIC tunnel during the design phase and the construction phase of the EIC project to account for new dead loads associated with new cable tray assemblies, new pipe supports and applicable collateral loads.

Performs independent reviews and design verification of peer work products and products developed by A-E engineers.

Attend and actively participate in design review meetings. Prepare, and submit comment sheets on the engineering deliverables and communicate stakeholder concerns and opportunities for improvement.

Conducts field walkdowns to validate existing conditions; collect and document design inputs from project stakeholders.

Provides input on responses to Request for Information (RFI) between the Architect-Engineering Firm and BSA.

Participates in assigned value engineering processes utilizing individual observation, experience, and knowledge to evaluate the project's design documents.

Qualifications

BS degree in an Engineering discipline

Professional Engineer License

Minimum seven (7) years progressively responsible related work experience that demonstrates a sound knowledge of current principles and practices in a specialized field of engineering.

Knowledgeable and proficient at applying advanced structural design and analysis software tools (i.e., GT STRUDLE, STAAD, etc.).

Engineering experience in the areas of equipment anchorage, structural steel frames, conduit supports, pipe stress analysis, piping supports and corrugated steel pipe design.

Knowledgeable and proficient at applying engineering theories and principles

Effective analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills.

Skilled in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.

Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of customers at all levels.

Demonstrated ability to interact and collaborate in an international, multi-cultural and diverse scientific, engineering and technology community.

Special Requirements:

Pre-employment Drug Screen - External applicants selected for this position are required to successfully complete a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Medical Exam(s) - Job related pre-placement medical examinations may be required for this position.

This position may require the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. If determined as such, this position would be identified as a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in addition to the pre-employment drug screen.

Pay Range

Salary Range: $115,000 to $175,000 annually – The salary offered to the successful candidate will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications, work experience, and their ability to meet the known requirements of the position as determined at the time of hire. Job location will also be a factor in determining the salary offered.
