ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities (vary dependent upon hiring level):
Engineer-in-Training:
Check structural design standards, specifications, and typical details for design and construction projectsPrepare structural documentation for design and construction projectsParticipate in field activities, such as site visits, field activities and structural observationsTravel may be required
Professional Engineer through Senior Engineer additional responsibilities could include:
Plans, monitors and manages structural engineering scope, schedule and budget for successful project completionPerforms quality management reviews of structural designs by others and works with designer to understand and resolve issues arising from the reviewPrepares estimates for cost and schedule of structural engineering services for design and constructionProduction of Contract Documents for construction of structures, including plans and specificationsConducts on-site investigations and evaluations of existing structures, including the preparation of reportsWorks with other project team members to understand and integrate their requirements into the structural designCoordinates details of design between various project design disciplinesMentors and trains staff and entry-level structural engineersAssists and coaches CADD technicians in developing presentations of structural designsPrepares and reviews opinions of construction costs for structural portion of projectsAssists field staff in resolving issues and questions during constructionAssists in continuing development and improvement of structural design standards, specifications, and typical detailsDevelops project-specific designs, standards, specifications and details for unusual or unique situationsTravel required when requestedMakes site visits to observe during construction and operation QualificationsQualifications (vary depending on hiring level):
Degree in in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with Structural EmphasisRegistration as a Professional Engineer or Structural Engineer in the State of California and/or Hawaii or EIT CertificationEngineer-in-Training: 0 - 4 years of experience in structural design codes and standardsProfessional Engineer: 4-8 years of experienceMid level Engineer: 6-12 years of experienceSenior level Engineer: 10-15+ years of experienceAbility to apply critical thinking, analysis, and innovative techniques to develop options and recommendations to solve technical problemsExperience in the application of building codes and code-referenced standards for design of water treatment and industrial structures in concrete, steel, and reinforced masonryHighly motivated self-starter with experience working with minimum supervision to determine and complete structural engineering tasks while acting as part of a multi-disciplinary project teamComprehensive knowledge and understanding of specifications for construction using concrete, masonry and steelComprehensive knowledge and understanding of presentation of structural design and detailing in construction documentsComprehensive knowledge and understanding of structural design codes and standardsSkilled in organizing and coordinating work with both peers and subordinates, and in planning, monitoring, and completing projects within that planProduction and project management skills and experienceStrong verbal and written communications skillsAbility to communicate effectively with clients and project teamsWork well in a team environmentHighly motivated and self-startingProficient in public speaking rolesProficient in MS Word and Excel Preferred QualificationsEducation and Experience (vary depending on hiring level):
