Summary

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a joint academic department with reporting lines to the College of Engineering and the Medical School.  The dual-school environment includes a growing faculty roster within both schools, a large and increasing collaborative research portfolio, multi-building research facilities, innovative instructional programs at all academic levels, and a focus on research translation and entrepreneurship.  BME is pursuing strategic goals to establish enhanced connections within and beyond both schools.  By launching shared facility cores to enable faculty success in research and providing an educational experience for undergraduate students through Ph.D. candidates, BME strives to best prepare graduates for the multitude of career options at the interface of engineering, life sciences, and medicine.

The Student Services Office within the Department of Biomedical Engineering is seeking a seasoned Student Administration Manager.  This role reports to the Chief Department Administrator/Unit Administrator.  It involves working closely with the leaders of the department to offer strategic direction and advice for all facets of academic and student affairs to students in Biomedical Engineering. Responsibilities include managing student recruitment and admissions; managing financial aid processes; overseeing academic advising; handling student records and enrollment; maintaining academic standards; implementing curricular and extracurricular educational experiences; conducting career development programs; and providing comprehensive student support services along with diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. The ideal candidate will be an established leader with excellent interpersonal, communication, and administrative capabilities, a proven track record in creating and administering programs that promote the growth of a varied student population, and proficiency in employing data-driven approaches to enhance student-related services. A robust commitment to the principles and goals of Biomedical Engineering, the College of Engineering, the Medical School, and the broader University of Michigan is essential.

Responsibilities*

The Student Administration Manager holds a pivotal role in the Biomedical Engineering department, partnering with the department's leaders, associate chairs of undergraduate and graduate studies, faculty members, staff, students, and alumni to elevate and enrich the student experience and engagement in learning through the following activities.

50% Student Services Operations:

Develop and lead a highly effective, diverse team to create, implement, and assess programs and activities including recruitment, admissions, advising, retention, career information, and engagement. Respond to inquiries from other admissions and records staff, other departments, students, faculty, and visitors regarding assigned admissions and records functions.Develop creative and innovative approaches to recruitment, admissions, and career services involving alumni, faculty, staff, and relevant partners.Oversee the collection of relevant data and the administration of records and standards to track student data. Provide high-level and detailed reporting to BME senior leadership and faculty

25% Student Funding and Operational Budget:

Manage student funding budgets, instructional support such as GSI, IA, and Grader placement, and all fellowship/scholarship award competitions.Lead fellowship workshops as needed and ensure Rackham fully-funded model compliance. Manage budgets for relevant programs, services, and activities. Ability to optimize and educate students on internal, external, University, and Rackham funding opportunities.

25% General Responsibilities: 

Provide strategic leadership and direction regarding student and academic affairs activities for the BME undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students. Provides academic advising services to current students, potential majors, minors, and others; utilizes confidential information and conducts confidential conversations to provide these services. Work collaboratively and foster effective relationships with BME staff in the administrative office, finance, human resources, IT, and communications.Student services-related event planning. Advise senior leadership on all aspects of the student experience and provide perspective on student impact to strategic unit-level discussions. Serve as the key liaison between the Student Services Office and the faculty on all student affairs matters.
 

Required Qualifications*

A bachelor's degree in a related field (Higher Education, Sociology, Psychology, Student Affairs) and a minimum of eight (8) years of experience in the field of student services or
a combination of experience in student services and counseling with at least three (3) years at a management level.Evidence of and demonstrated success in creating an inclusive, service-oriented environment for a multicultural student body. Proven ability to foster, work in, and appreciate an interdisciplinary and diverse community environment. Knowledge of and proven application of Student Development Theory and a thorough understanding of counseling techniques is required.Demonstrated ability to mentor, manage, and develop a high-functioning work team, collaborate across units, engage with faculty, and build consensus.Demonstrated ability to formulate strategic plans, implement programs, and evaluate the success of these initiatives. Awareness of and appreciation for the evolving role of technology and social media in all aspects of student affairs work.Demonstrated ability to handle crises effectively and to solve problems proactively and creatively.Demonstrated success in interpersonal relations, collaboration, reasoning, and exercising sound judgment.Strong ability to work independently and as part of a team.  Able to use initiative to identify where changes are needed and make appropriate recommendations. Willing to participate in project work to improve administrative systems.Excellent communication skills.
 

Desired Qualifications*

Master's degree in related field.Proven track record of implementing or overseeing student-focused programs or policies relating to diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and accessibility.Knowledge of GEO and Academic HR is a plus.

Work Locations

The Michigan Engineering Office of Biomedical Engineering operates in a hybrid work environment consisting of both in-person and remote work.
