Student Assistant - Fuel Monitoring

Posting Details Position Information Job Title Student Assistant - Fuel Monitoring General Description This is a student position responsible for assisting in the operations and activities of a department or a departmental project, program, or function.
Particular activities and functions of this student position will be to participate in fire related activities with the U.S. Forest Service and other agencies. Job Duties 1. Displays a positive, professional attitude and supports coworkers, students, staff, supervisors, and the department.
2. Adheres to all rules, regulations, and safety standards.
3. Participates in various activities at prescribed burns, wildfires, and other fire related activities.
4. Be willing to travel on weekends and sometimes during the week when called for fires.
5. Performs other related duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 1. Ability to understand and follow instructions.
2. Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with university faculty and staff, students, agency representatives, and the general public.
3. Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies.
4. Ability to handle stressful situations and display mature judgment.
5. Must have completed the “RED CARD” U.S. Forest Service wildland fire training.
6. Must be up to date with Pack test.
7. Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties. Required Qualifications The minimum education required for admittance as a student at Stephen F. Austin State University.
MUST BE RED CARD CERTIFIED THROUGH U.S.F.S.
MUST BE UP TO DATE WITH PACK TEST.
Successful applicants must be willing to travel on weekends and sometimes during the week to participate in prescribed burns, wildfires (if called) and other fire related activities with USFS and other agencies. Preferred Qualifications Must be familiar with vegetation measurement techniques used if forestry and willing to learn wildland fire management measurement methods.
Must be able to work in heat and be physically able to walk through vegetationUp to 40 hours per week in summer.Must be qualified to drive SFA vehicles.
Physical Demands Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
Must be able to tolerate the elements of outdoors and rugged terrain.
*Ability to perform work in varying and often times harsh environmental conditions including summer heat, winter cold, wind, rain, humidity with the added elements of fire and smoke. Special Conditions for Eligibility A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters. To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.
Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.
