Student Assistant Specialist (Harm Reduction Specialist)

Position Availability: Student Health Services’ Wellness and Health Promotion (SHS/WHP) is seeking a Harm Reduction Specialist,   who will support substance use health and wellness projects and initiatives for students at The New School.  The candidate must be a New School student with Federal Work Study (FWS) as part of their financial aid packet for the academic year 2024-2025.  Position Title: Student Assistant Specialist (Harm Reduction Specialist) Requisition Number: 0406073472 Location New York City Position Type: Student Department: Stdnt Srvcs/Enrollment Ops Responsibilities: Specific duties and responsibilities include: Plan and implement outreach and education around awareness days and weeks throughout the year including Overdose Awareness Day, Mental Health Awareness Month, Depression screening day, etc. Interface with Residence and Housing Education, support Resident Advisors (RAs) and other housing staff and offer harm reduction related programming.  Create and curate social media and social norms messaging around drug education misuse minimization, awareness and de-stigmatization of people who use substances and persons in recovery from substance use disorders or drug related health issues. Assist with special projects and events related to the mission of SHS. Conduct and promote events throughout the university, which will include special events, workshops and training, tabling and flyering across the university. Some of the events may be in the evening and weekends. Liaise with students as a student ambassador of SHS.  Attend occasional meetings on and off campus, including peer health advocacy trainings.  Provide content for and help promote our social media. Train as a Peer Health Advocate (PHA). There is a mandatory PHA training retreat during the Spring 2025 semester. Commit to approximately 2 hours/week of administrative office duties and perform other assignments as needed that support Student Health Services. 


Hybrid/Split -This position requires a regularly scheduled, consistent percentage of time on campus and also works some of the time remotely. This will be coordinated with the supervisor.  This position requires both work on site at Student Health Services or at other locations on the university campus and independent work that can be done remotely. The final schedule will be determined with the supervisor and could be variable week by week, depending on the programs and services being offered.

Hourly Rate: $21 Minimum Qualifications: You should have an interest in substance use, harm reduction, mental health and well-being.  We seek candidates with a strong work ethic, the ability to take initiative, work independently, communicate clearly and meet deadlines. You must be organized and able to interact with students, staff, and faculty of diverse backgrounds.  Preferred Qualifications: We prefer students with experience in health promotion, mental health Initiatives, and previous experience in coordinating and presenting workshops.
