Start Date - June 2, 2025
The Student Nurse Extern is a hybrid learning and operational role. The position will function as a patient care technician under the direction of a registered nurse and spend dedicated time learning about the professional practice of nursing. The SNE will adhere to health system and departmental policies and procedures, facilitate a positive patient experience environment and will have opportunity to experience different care environments to expand knowledge of the various practice environments and roles of the professional nurse. This position operates under supervision of the licensed professional nurse preceptor. Work situations are varied with an emphasis on delivery of basic clinical nursing care that can be delegated to an unlicensed assistive personal and in alignment with the nursing process.
Basic Clinical Care: Uses the foundation of the nursing process (Assessment, Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation/Coordination/Teaching and Promotion, Evaluation) to guide care and respond to patient needs as delegated to by nurses and other care team staff as applicable:
Assists with Activities of Daily Living: Meets the comfort and hygiene need of the patient by providing personal hygiene assistance, bed changes and other applicable needs. Distributes meals, beverages & assists patients with meal prep and feeding/eating. Assists with mobility and ambulation as directed.
Assists with delegated clinical data collection: Collects vital signs, measures heights and weights, collects lab specimens and performs delegated tasks. Provides input and observations to patient care nurse to support the plan of care. Observes progress of patients and reports findings to appropriate staff nurse and/or charge nurse.
Assists with delegated nursing task completion: Assists with completion of patient testing and treatment procedures; assists with transfers and transport of patients; assists with clinical care of patient as determined by nursing staff
Closed-loop communication: Communicates effectively and timely with patients, families and members of the care team. Performs required documentation and communicates in a competent and effective manner to meet patient and/or family needs and regulatory requirements. Maintains strict confidentiality of patient, employee and department information to ensure patient rights.
Assists with nursing sensitive indicators: Assists with nursing interventions intended to prevent patient complications
Requirements:
Completion of Junior Year of BSN program or completion of 1st of 2 years of ADN program; from an accredited program
Completion of 1 or more fundamental of nursing courses within the above mentioned accredited programCompletion of 40 or more hours of clinical experience as evidenced by a clinical faculty letter attesting to the aboveBLS/CPR through the American Heart Association
