Position Purpose:

Under direct supervision, provides care to patients of all ages during surgical intervention.  Practices directly under the supervision and direction of the surgeon, registered nurse circulator, certified surgical technologist, or physician assistant during the intra-operative phase of patient care.  Is responsible for preparing the operating room for the surgical procedure including the instruments, equipment, and supplies. Maintains the sterile field during the surgical procedure.  The Surgical Tech student may also help serve in other roles on the surgical team and is expected to second or third or fourth scrub all surgical specialties. 

What you will Do:

Assumes the responsibility of maintenance of the OR department in a patient ready state, including cleaning and stocking of supplies/equipment.Applies knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative technique relative to operative procedures.Applies principles of asepsis and infection control.Assists with position, prepping, and draping of the patient.Assists with exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging.Assists with handling tissue as directed and supervised by the surgeon during the operative procedureApplies surgical dressings and stack drain reservoirs.Promotes and maintains a safe and calm environment for patients by ensuring appropriate supplies and equipment are readily available.Exhibits professional behavior to peers which is demonstrated by maintaining and/or increasing skills needed for personal development, providing a cohesive team environment, and proactive in problem solving.Complies with all policies and procedures.Maintains cleanliness of assigned department including treatment areas and equipment.Responds to numerous telephones, intercom, visitor or staff inquiries and relays accurate messages to appropriate person in a timely manner exercising good judgment.Receives and records telephone reports from other departments, and utilizing good judgment, relays information to nurse in charge or other appropriate personnel.Initiates appropriate response and demonstrates proper judgment in critical situations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Has completed the Surgical Technology Program or is enrolled in and has passed test out to go to the clinical settings.Maintains Basic Cardiac Life Support certification unless a doctor’s release is provided in  which case yearly proficiency must be demonstrated through oral and written testing.Maintains a current Mandatory Reporter for Dependent adults and children.Is able to communicate effectively with all members of the health care team.Is able to perform a variety of duties characterized by frequent change.Maintains a high level of professionalism, which positively promotes the image of MercyOne Medical Center.
