The primary purpose of this position is to provide a student trainee in the Pathways Internship Program with on-the-job training and guidance. The student trainee performs laboring tasks which require significant manual skill and operation of mechanical equipment. ****THIS PUBLIC NOTICE COVERS ALL SUMMER HIRE STUDENT TRAINEE, WG-3501-1/2/3/4 POSITIONS FOR ALL TITLES**** Responsibilities ****This position is temporary and has a Not-to-Exceed date. However, this position may be extended to the fullest legally allowable period without competition. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or funds.**** WG-01/2/3/4 Lifts and carries light to medium weight packages, materials, and tools. Opens and unpacks cardboard cartons by hand and removes contents. Uses handtruck to move bulky, but light, loads. Performs such duties as picking up trash and paper from grounds, raking leaves or grass, pulling weeds, watering and trimming grass, spreading abrasives and/or chemicals on icy surfaces, washing motor vehicles (by hand), and cleaning hand tools after use. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe work environment. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing (e.g., safety gloves, ear plugs, safety glasses, steel-toe shoes, or respirators). Maintains a clean work environment. Cleans and lines up hand tools. Performs simple clean-up duties, such as sweeping and straightening assigned area. WG-02 Loads, unloads, moves, and stacks material such as heavy boxes and bulky items by hand, handtrucks, or dollies. Opens crates and boxes using crowbars and cuts bands using shears. Places items where directed. Operates hand tools and simple power equipment such as hand lawnmowers, walking-type power mowers, handsaws, hatchets, and clippers to perform tasks such as mowing lawns, clearing small trees and bushes, and removing snow. May use a shovel to dig ditches and trenches where soil is not compacted and grading and sloping is not required, or to fill holes, level bumps and low places, or remove coal, ash, snow, sand, dirt, etc. Performs a variety of manual tasks such as moving, arranging, collecting, and cleaning equipment and materials. Moves and arranges furniture, as directed. May collect and empty garbage cans, burn garbage and trash, and wash and wax cars and trucks by hand or using a powered buffer. WG-03 Loads, unloads, moves, and stacks heavy boxes or bulky items from trucks, trailers, and other conveyances using handtrucks or dollies. May carry and assemble scaffolding. May move, lift, and carry extremely heavy boxes, sacks, or furniture weighing 80-100 pounds (36-45 kilograms) or more. Operates heavy hand tools and power equipment such as heavy, walking-type power mowers, edgers, weedeaters, hedge trimmers, mechanical spreaders, handsaws, chainsaws, hatchets, picks, shovels, and clippers to perform tasks such as mowing lawns; trimming tree limbs; digging ditches and trenches in hard, compacted soil; grading and sloping; clearing small trees and bushes; and shoveling snow. Occasionally, and for short periods, may use jackhammer to break up pavement. Maintains and accounts for all types of hand or power tools required to accomplish assigned duties. Performs operator maintenance, cleaning, and adjustments on all tools and equipment including, but not limited to, adding gasoline and oil, adjusting blades, tightening nuts and bolts, and cleaning and oiling mowers and other large power equipment. WG-04 Operates large, complex riding lawn mowers and similar types of specialized mowing equipment (e.g., multiple and independently-controlled cutting decks) and/or specially designed riding mowers that operate on slopes and require constant attention to working space and environment. Reviews assigned project or plan. Determines and selects the most appropriate type of equipment to accomplish each phase of the work in the most productive and cost-effective manner. Completes all aspects of special assignments involving several steps, phases, or detailed procedures (e.g., preparing ground, laying sod, planting flowers or shrubs, and using simple drawings to establish a planting pattern and/or design). Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the generalized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Student Trainee Positions. Failure to submit transcripts, proof of acceptance or current enrollment in an accredited college/university will result in an ineligible rating. QUALIFICATIONS: For WG-01 grade level: Current enrollment in a high school diploma program For WG-02 grade level: Completion of high school diploma or equivalent no later than June 2025 AND acceptance or current enrollment in an accredited college/university For WG-03 grade level: Completion of 30 semester hours or more of post high school study leading towards a qualifying degree (i.e. associate's, bachelor's, master's, etc.) For WG-04 grade level: Completion of 60 semester hours or more of post high school study leading towards a qualifying degree (i.e. associate's, bachelor's, master's, etc.) NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. ***For completed educational programs or equivalent during Spring/Summer 2025, proof of acceptance or current enrollment in an accredited college/university for Fall 2025 must be provided** PLEASE NOTE: This is not a developmental opportunity; this position will be filled at the WG-01 through WG-04 depending on applicant qualifications and organizational requirements. The individual selected for this position may be considered for promotion to a higher grade without further competition upon meeting all legal and regulatory/program requirements.
