Duties: The Center for International Programs (CIP) at the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz is seeking a Study Abroad Advisor to join a highly professional team committed to international educational exchange and Global Learning for all. CIP encompasses study abroad, international students and scholars services, English as a Second Language, and international internship programs based in New York City. The study abroad staff manage 70 programs in 30 countries that provide study abroad opportunities to over 500 students each year.
The Study Abroad Advisor at the Center for International Programs is a full-time, 12-month position with full benefits and reports to the Director of Global Learning. Some night and weekend work may be required.
Duties include but are not limited to:• Responsible for the advising, administration, marketing, and programming for a portfolio of approved studies programs abroad, both academic and language.• Manages assigned study abroad programs in terms of: day-to-day administration; providing guidance to students on application procedures; application review and admission notification; communication with students, parents, other campus units, and faculty; works closely with overseas partner institutions; maintaining up-to-date program information.• As a member of the SUNY Council on International Education Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion works to promote opportunities for underrepresented students to study abroad at New Paltz and across the system.• Liaise with the following campus offices in support of students preparing to study abroad: EOP, SMP, C-STEP, and other programs of academic support and enrichment for students, especially those underrepresented in study abroad; Financial Aid Office; Student Health Center/Student Counseling Center.• Supporting New Paltz students applying for National Scholarships including Gilman, Boren and Critical Language Scholarship.• Promoting affordable opportunities for study abroad and advising students on available financial aid and New Paltz Foundation scholarships.• Coordinating marketing and recruitment for a portfolio of study abroad programs.• Representing SUNY New Paltz at other SUNY institution study abroad fairs.• Serving as the study abroad health and safety coordinator.• Assisting in the promotion, planning, and implementation of study abroad events such as the Study Abroad Fair, Pre-departure Orientation, Re-entry Workshop, etc. – some of these events may take place in the evening or on weekends .• Monitoring emergency phone and responding appropriately to study abroad student emergencies.
Qualifications: Required:• Bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization (Note: Candidates with only a Bachelor’s degree will be expected to have more relevant experience.)• Experience working with college or university students;• Knowledge of study abroad health, safety, and risk management best practices;• Demonstrated interest in and commitment to diversity and inclusiveness the field of International Education;• Strong interpersonal and intercultural skills;• Strong writing and organizational skills;• Demonstrated experience as a team player in addition to the ability to work independently:• Ability to occasionally travel for marketing events and professional conferences• Applicants must address in their applications their ability to work with a culturally diverse population;• Strong technology skills with MS Office, videoconferencing, social media, etc. and ability to learn new computer applications and programs.
Preferred:• A Master’s degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization is highly preferred, witha further preference for a Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, orinternational education• Foreign language ability, especially Spanish• Experience living or studying abroad• Prior experience managing study abroad programs, including faculty-led programs• Prior experience working with diverse students as demonstrated by collaboration with opportunity programs and/or other relevant units on a college campus as well assuccessful scholarship advising• Engagement in professional organizations such as NAFSA, Forum on Education Abroad, and Diversity Abroad Network• Familiarity with study abroad data and application managements systems, especially Terra Dotta software• Experience advising students for national-level scholarships such as Gilman, Boren, Fulbright
