Substation Engineer - P&C

Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a mid-level Protection and Control Engineer to join our Renewables Substation team. The primary function of this role is to lead the Substation P&C Engineering and Design efforts for large scale, transmission-interconnected renewable energy projects. The P&C Engineer will work with (and provide direction to) other engineers, designers, and drafters to develop project deliverables that satisfy all stakeholder requirements and comply with applicable codes & standards. As part of the broader multi-discipline Substation Team, the P&C Engineer will work with the Substation Project Engineer and other discipline leads to ensure design documents are coordinated and consistent between the Physical, Civil/Structural, Relay Settings, and SCADA teams.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Performs all aspects of P&C design for high voltage (4kV – 230kV) and EHV (above 230kV) substation projects to include:

·         Development of all project drawings

o   One-lines

o   Three-lines

o   AC/DC schematics

o   Relay panel elevation and BOM

o   Control enclosure layout and BOM

o   Equipment and Relay Panel Wiring diagrams

o   Communication schematics and connection details

·         Development of studies / calculations

o   Station service AC load calculations and transformer sizing

o   Station battery / charger DC load calculations and sizing

o   CT Saturation studies

o   Voltage drop / cable sizing

·         Assist with development of major equipment specifications

·         Review equipment vendor submittals for conformance with specs and project requirements

·         Review P&C deliverables completed by others

·         Cross discipline checks with other substation / service leads

·         Attend internal and external project meetings as needed

·         Assist Project Engineer with procurement and construction support tasks

Salary Range: $80,000 - $110,000+ depending on experience

Required Skills Requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from a recognized accredited programEIT Certification Required Experience Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from a recognized accredited program4+ years work experience in high voltage substation P&C designStrong knowledge of substation zones of protectionTypical protection and control schemes for:Transmission Lines, HV/MV Buses, Power Transformers, Cap Banks, etc.Relay manufacturers (make and model)Incorporating those relays in the design to achieve desired protectionFamiliarity with Substation major equipment and the specifications, schematics, and wiring thereof:HV and MV Circuit BreakersPower TransformersInstrument TransformersDisconnect SwitchesLV AC Systems (Station Service)LV DC Systems (Station Batteries / Chargers)Capacitor BanksRelay Panels & Control EnclosuresStrong written and verbal communications skillsFamiliarity with industry standards and codesANSI, IEEE, NEC, NESC, NERC, etc.General knowledge of the industry and technology trends specific to substations Preferred Experience Professional engineering license or ability to obtain one within 2 years of hire.Previous experience in a consultancy environmentPrevious experience with large scale renewable energy projectsGeneral knowledge of relay settings / protection device coordinationGeneral knowledge of SCADA and communications systemsGeneral knowledge of substation construction practices

This position is classified as in-office, full time.Preferred office locations:Austin, TXMadison, WIRaleigh, NCCharlotte, NCOther locations may be considered Compensation Range Minimum USD $80,000.00/Yr.
