Primary Purpose Under the direction of a higher classified employee, he/she assists higher classified employees as directed to perform scheduled and emergency switching and grounding operations to company and customer-owned substation circuits/equipment at distribution and transmission voltages. Assists in performing alarm, control circuit problem and first response action for abnormal/emergency electric system trouble; evaluating conditions and performing or recommending corrective action. Assists in connecting high voltage test and fault locating equipment, providing protection for workers, providing phase identification, and performing continuity and phasing tests to new or damaged circuits/equipment. Assists in performing routine inspections of company-owned substation circuits/equipment for normal operating conditions, building and grounds for proper security and safety hazards and corrects unsatisfactory conditions or refers problems, as required. Assists in performing switching and grounding operations in underground network and customer vaults; and operating gang operated overhead switches, load break oil switches and pole type voltage regulators. Primary Duties * Follow Safety Policies, Procedures and Work Practices – Use tools and equipment needed to work tasks safely. Use and maintain personal protective equipment. Comply with all safety-related corporate policies, procedures and work practices. Perform safety inspections, conduct or participate in tailgate or safety meetings, identify and correct safety hazards, and anticipate potential problems to ensure a safe work environment for oneself and others. * Demonstrate and Develop Technical Proficiency - Install, operate, maintain test, and/or troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, or electronic devices and associated equipment in substations, power plants, or customer premises, use manufacturer instruction books, operating tests, and company maintenance, installation and environmental procedures, including drawings and schematics, to perform technical responsibilities. * Develop skills utilizing technical tools and equipment, processes, and analytical techniques through work, field and classroom training and independent study. * Operate Vehicles – Drive company motor vehicles and self-propelled equipment, on or off company property. Must possess a valid D.C. or state driver’s license with necessary endorsements to meet federal and state commercial motor vehicle driving requirements, as applicable. Perform daily operational activities associated with company policies, procedures, federal, state and local laws pertaining to operating, stocking, cleaning, and preventive maintenance of company vehicles. * Provide Customer Service - Provide customer service within and across business unit lines and to external Pepco customers, consistent with our Company vision and values. Minimum Qualifications The Company Proposes the following job description for Substation Ops: * Demonstrated ability and experience in electrical or mechanical work. * Ability to obtain a valid driver’s license and ability to meet Company driving standards. * High school Diploma or equivalent work experience. * Climb and work from both extension and step ladders to access, circuit breakers, disconnect switch structures, light fixtures & heaters, cable trays, sump pumps in oil reclaiming pit manholes; and climbing through hatches/grates by using fixed vertical steel ladders to cable vaults, fire protection rooms, substation roofs and network transformer street vaults and manholes. * Push and pull high voltage circuit breakers to maneuver, install, or extract from metal clad switchgear; high voltage fuses to open or close; and tool gang boxes. * Lift portable ground leads more than 50 lbs.; manholes and network street grates; toolboxes, gas cylinders, heaters, ladders, power tools, etc. * Work on or around energized equipment. * Squat, kneel, bend and twist to open/close circuit breakers, fuses and disconnects to isolate, verify and/or restore circuit apparatus, troubleshooting alarms/blown fuses, maintaining nitrogen, lighting and ventilation systems. * Ability to hear equipment operations, arcing conductors, calls on the company radio and telephones, air pressure systems, etc. Ability to see color indications for circuit/equipment status; read drawings, one-line-drawings, schematics diagrams, road maps, and equipment identification markings. * Ability to work while standing for extended periods of time to inspect substation circuit/equipment; performing switching & grounding operations; troubleshooting alarms/blown fuses, and maintaining nitrogen, lighting and ventilation systems. Ability to walk on uneven surfaces such as bluestone in substation switchyards. * Work occasionally at heights up to 30-40 feet to perform switching & grounding operations on disconnect switches and bus support structures. The typical switching & grounding operations is a more frequent task that requires working at heights up to 20 feet. * Ability to safely work in confined spaces such as vaults and rooms accessed through hatches. * Ability to perform switching & grounding operations; troubleshooting alarms/blown fuses, and maintaining nitrogen, lighting and ventilation systems at varying heights above the head. * Ability to wear a respirator and other job-related Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E). * Possess valid jurisdiction driver’s license and ability to drive and operate applicable Company Vehicles. Ability to obtain and maintain the necessary CMV certification. * Read, write and speak English. * Work in areas that may be noisy and dirty. * Employees in this classification are NERC and FERC qualified positions. As such, they will be required to comply with NERC and FERC standards and requirements and follow company procedures designed to meet these requirements. Employees in this classification are required to complete and maintain their NERC and FERC certifications annually or may result in discipline up to and including termination. * Must pass a criminal history background check and motor vehicle records check.
