The American Red Cross is actively seeking 10 Summer Camp Counselors in Philadelphia, PA, for temporary, summer work.
The temporary positions will work 20 hours a week for 8 weeks starting the last week of June. The schedule is: Monday - Friday, 8 am to 1 pm.
Must be age 18 or older.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
The Summer Camp Counselor position supports the Youth Preparedness Program within the Regional Disaster Cycle Services department. Each Summer Camp Counselor will need to pass a child protective services background check along with a good driver record as reported by the Division of Motor Vehicles. Counselors will operate Red Cross fleet vehicles to travel to youth camp locations each day Monday – Friday within the City of Philadelphia.
The “Save a Life” Summer Camp Program saves lives and prevents injury by providing instruction for Disaster Cycle Services (DCS) youth curriculum supporting the Prepare with Pedro and Be Red Cross Ready programs.
Prepare with Pedro is a 30-45-minute presentation that provides emergency preparedness education to youth in grades K-3 (ages 4-8) in school classrooms and other settings by following Pedro the Penguin as he learns how to be prepared and take action during an emergency.
The Be Red Cross Ready program is a 40-60-minute presentation that provides emergency preparedness education to youth in grades 4 and above (ages 9 +) in school classrooms and other settings.
Utilization of numerous tools for this program includes a standardized curriculum, workbook, quizzes and activities have been carefully constructed with the help of curriculum and hazard experts. These tools for presenters were developed to foster consistency and fidelity to the program’s goals and objectives. The highly interactive presentation addresses home fire safety, a local natural hazard, psycho-social coping skills and household preparedness steps like making a plan and a kit.
Team member roles include being a presenter, presentation assistant and administrative support.

Presenter Responsibilities:
Conduct Prepare with Pedro and Be Red Cross Ready presentations for youth at summer camp settings.
Successfully complete the Basic Instructor Fundamentals for Youth, Module 1, Module 2 teach-back, and Module 3 assessment
Work as a team with the Team Lead and other volunteers and employees to build Prepare with Pedro in the region
Successfully complete Be Red Cross Ready training and teach-backs
Ensure all reporting data for each presentation given is collected and given to regional staff in a timely manner
Other duties as agreed to between the presenter and the Team Lead
Presentation Assistant Responsibilities:
Support Prepare with Pedro Presenter while they deliver the presentation.
Disburse and collect materials from students; assist with classroom management; grade quizzes; work with individual students during the activities; assist with other duties as requested by the presenter.
Complete the reports for the presentation site(s).
Complete any Curriculum-Specific Courses
Mentor new presentation assistants to help the region build a team of experienced youth preparedness volunteers.
Work as a team with the Team Lead and other volunteers and employees to build Prepare with Pedro and Be Red Cross ready in the region.
Other duties as agreed with the presenter and the Team Lead.
Administrative Support Responsibilities:
Provide EDGE Learning Management System administrative support
Print program training materials
Coordinate with Presenters and Team Lead regarding timely arrival at presentation locations each day
Work with Prepare with Pedro Presenter/Presentation Assistant to coordinate materials pick up/drop off
Carry out administrative duties, such as:
Data management
Inventory management
Report responsibilities
Gather and ready presentation supplies
Respond to email inquiries in a timely manner
Presenter Trainer Role Responsibilities:
Successfully complete the Basic Instructor Fundamentals for Youth, Prepare with Pedro Fundamentals Part 1 and Prepare with Pedro Fundamentals Part 2 teach-back
Present program to student audiences
Attend any additional training required as specified by the Team Lead
Plan and lead Presenter Trainings using National Headquarters (NHQ) developed resources
Responsible for training individuals to present Prepare with Pedro curriculum proficiently
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED:
Education: High School or equivalent required.
Experience: No experience required. Will train
Skills & Abilities: May be required to have basic computer skills. Exemplary interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills. Work well with youth. Ability to work on a team.
Travel: daily travel is required throughout the City of Philadelphia. A current, valid driver's license with good driving record is required.
Physical Requirements:
Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. Regularly lift and/or move objects 10 -50 pounds. Occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. The work environment will consist of moderate noise.
