About the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites:
The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites (ISMHS) is a museum system with 12 locations across the state, including the Indiana State Museum in downtown Indianapolis and 11 historic sites across the state. The ISMHS is a forward-thinking, unparalleled resource for learning about and appreciating Indiana and its role in the world. We discover, collect, preserve, interpret, and present artifacts and exhibits that showcase the stories of Indiana's natural and cultural history, art, and science.
Role Overview:
The Summer Camp Counselor works in the Programs and Education Engagement department as assigned within the Museum Summer Camp program.
This position will be work work 7:45 am-1:15 pm or 12:00 pm – 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday from, June 2, 2025– June 27, 2025 and July 7, 2025 – August 1, 2025. Will also work a single day from May 27, 2025 – May 30, 2025. Mandatory training dates on May 10, 2025 and May 17, 2025.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $16.73 per hour but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
A Day in the Life:
+ Assist with the facilitation of camp activities including troubleshooting problems, engaging youth in hands-on activities, and overseeing campers.
+ Assist with program development, materials preparation, and supply coordination.
+ Directly supervise children in camp and discipline when needed; report disciplinary issues to the camp director immediately.
+ Mentor and encourage creativity & exploration and hands-on, minds-on learning with campers.
+ Be a role model for campers in leadership, a positive attitude, and a desire to learn and innovate.
+ Assist with set-up and clean-up of games and activities.
+ Assist with input of all camper information: camp reservations, registration packets, and demographic information.
+ Assist with evaluation, data entry, and interpretation.
+ Provide a safe environment for campers for play, learning, and discovery.
+ Assist with museum-related demonstrations and programs.
+ Engage visitors in museum galleries during daily events and activities.

What You'll Need for Success:
+ High School Diploma required.
+ Some experience working with school-aged-youth is required.
+ Ability to communicate information to multiple audiences, including children in a wide variety of formats.
+ Ability to work a flexible schedule from week to week, mostly Monday-Friday; some weekends as scheduled.
+ Exhibit excellent public speaking skills, enthusiasm, and creativity while interacting with visitors of all ages and abilities.
+ Must be a team player.
+ Experience working with children in a camp, educational, or childcare setting.
+ Ability to maintain a professional appearance and attitude.
Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:
This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
