Examples of Duties + Assign responsibilities, prepare shift schedules, coordinate work, and ensure coverage when employees are unavailable or unable to perform work. + Provide clear direction, set priorities, build accountability, and monitor to track performance. + Interview, hire, orient, and train Animal Control Officers and Investigators. + Conduct annual reviews, set performance goals, provide feedback and coaching to meet goals and develop staff skill levels. + Instruct new personnel in the policies, procedures, and general operations of animal control. + Prepare accident reports, recommendations for disciplinary actions, and responses to citizen complaints. + Explain departmental policies and interpret laws, ordinances, and procedures for subordinate staff and the public. + Monitor dispatch and field work activities of Animal Control Officers and Investigators. + Review all work records and activity reports to ensure accuracy and proper filing. + Perform euthanasia of sick, injured or unclaimed animals ensuring humane, safe, and proper procedures are employed. + Ensure basic vehicle, equipment, and building tasks are performed in a timely manner. + Assist in budget preparation and monitoring of operational expenditures. + Monitor the radio and telephone systems to maintain full communication with animal control crews, other agencies, and the public. Minimum Qualifications Qualifications (required): + High School Graduation or G.E.D. + Minimum of three (3) years of experience in municipal Animal Control or as a Law Enforcement Officer. Qualifications (preferred): Minimum of one (1) year of experience as an Animal Control Investigator. Supplemental Information All Detroit Health Department employees are required to be on call during any designated local, state, or national emergency, whereby, the Detroit Health Department is required to provide services for the citizens of Detroit, the State of Michigan, or the United States of America. Physical Demands The employee generally engages in light physical activity to work in the field with person to person contact and some stationary work in an office environment. The employee is expected to move about to accomplish tasks. Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 60 pounds. Work Environment Work is performed primarily in indoor and outdoor environments (e.g. care center, clinic. etc.) with potential exposure to blood, body fluids, and airborne pathogens. Some work requires travel to meetings, conferences, and other work sites with exposure to seasonal weather conditions.
