Supervising Engineer - Interconnections

Overview The Rhode Island Energy Company is seeking a Supervising Engineer who will oversee approximately six engineers focused on load and generation interconnections within RI Electric Asset Management. The positions splits time between our Providence, RI and Lincoln, RI locations. The role’s purpose is to provide technical expertise and oversight to a team of engineers to ensure a safe, efficient, environmentally responsible, and reliable interconnection analysis aligned with RI Electric Asset Management objectives. Specific objectives include, but are not limited to Ensure interconnection analysis is completed in a timely manner to meet regulatory requirements. Ensure technical analysis is complete to prevent impacts and provide benefits from new load or generation interconnections. Ensure distributed energy resources such as solar generation, wind generation, battery energy storage, electric vehicles, and heating electrification are interconnected according to latest technological developments. Ensure studies, estimates, and project documentation are sufficient for project execution. Responsibilities Core Responsibilities: Review and conduct interconnection impact studies in order to determine issues and opportunities associated with interconnection applications and recommend appropriate infrastructure. Supervise and assist detailed electric system modeling and data gathering. Supervise and assist analysis Supervise and assist estimate development and report creation Research distributed energy technologies such as solar generation, wind generation, battery energy storage, electric vehicles, and heating electrification to develop new analysis methods and interconnection standards. Communicate with internal and external stakeholders to provide status, preliminary findings, and final results. Communication responsibilities include dispute resolution as necessary. Support government and regulatory data requests and filings, particularly in relation to distributed generation interconnections. Interface with transmission engineering staff and New England Independent System Operators (ISO-NE) to coordinate interconnections between distribution and transmission systems. Additional Accountabilities: Provide storm restoration support during major storm events. Storm support can require off-hour and weekend response. Qualifications Basic Qualifications Electrical Engineering Bachelor of Science Degree earned from an ABET accredited school and 5 years of related work experience preferred. Mechanical and Civil Bachelor of Science Degree earned from an ABET accredited school and 5 years of related work experience preferred acceptable. Working towards/holder of the Registered Professional Engineering License. Knowledge of The Narragansett Electric Company’s business operations, company policies and practices preferred. Knowledge and experience in an electrical engineering environment, preferably a utility. Good written and oral communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a matrix management environment. Understanding of distribution line design, substation design and protection, controls & integration, and metering schemes. Knowledge of distribution protection schemes. ASPEN or CAPE software experience preferred. Ability to perform distribution load flow analysis. PSSE and/or CYME experience preferred. Knowledge and experience studying or working with inverters, solar generation, wind generation, battery energy storage, and/or electric vehicles is preferred. Work Environment: Majority of time will be in a normal office environment Some time will be in the field and near high voltage equipment requiring personal protective equipment (PPE) and a variety of safety training and certifications. Field time may be during inclement weather during emergencies
