Supervising Respiratory Care Practitioner

Summary

SUMMARY: Supervises the operation and quality of care on a work shift in the Respiratory Therapy Department and Pulmonary Function Laboratory; to assign, direct, evaluate, and initiate disciplinary actions for practitioners and aides assigned to the shift; performs Respiratory Care Practitioner functions as needed.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.

1. Supervises staff and manages employee performance; provides on-going performance feedback, addresses problems, orients and trains employees, verifies competency and identifies and suggests ways to develop skills; monitors workflow/scheduling etc.

2. Oversees shift to shift productivity to budget targets, adjusts staffing as necessary and completes variance reports as assigned.

3. Meets with vendor representatives to review new equipment and troubleshoot issues with existing equipment in relation to staff education/use.

4. Conducts safety rounds and continually evaluates the environment of care for safety issues; escalates safety issues as discovered.

5. Plans, implements plan-do-study-act (PDSA) cycles as part of process improvement plan; evaluates results and revises for next PDSA as indicated. 
 

6. Conducts audits related to safety and quality measures and organized results into reports to disseminate to other departments/disciplines as directed.

7. Engages in patient care when needed; oxygen delivery with all current devices utilized in the department, ventilator management, IPPB therapy, patient assessment, suctioning for secretions and arterial blood gas acquisition and analysis.

8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Education: High School diploma or equivalent; graduation from an AMA approved school of Respiratory Therapy

Preferred Education: Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration or related field.

Required Experience: Three years experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist in an acute care setting.

Preferred Experience: One year experience in a supervisory role.

Required Licenses/Certifications: Possession of a valid license to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in the state of California; registry level credentialing with the National Board for Respiratory Care; BLS-Basic Life Support Certification – issued by AHA-American Heart Association; ACLS-Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification – issued by AHA-American Heart Association; NRP- Neonatal Resuscitation Program Certification.
