How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region: TheSupervisor, Commuter RailMaintenance position is responsible for providing supervision, direction and coordination between shifts in the Commuter Rail Maintenance division. The incumbent in this position will provide support for the Northstar Commuter Rail by maintaining the commuter rail fleet to Metro Transit's standards, enforce all policies and procedures, and ensure fleet maintenance is performed in a timely and safe manner. NOTE: This position will establish a six-month eligible list for current and future positions. What you would do in this job * Supervises activities and provides technical maintenance training, direction and inspection of work of vehicle and rail maintenance personnel to maintain all rail vehicle subsystem and Commuter Rail support equipment. * Provides specific written and verbal instruction and direction to rail vehicle and support maintenance staff. * Monitors maintenance activities to ensure compliance with maintenance/warranty goals. Takes necessary action to ensure that maintenance standards are attained. * Ensures vendor compliance with policies, procedures, technical specifications and contract provisions. * Interacts with vendor representatives on all aspects of warranty repair, modifications, failures and retrofits. * Provides direction for stores personnel, pertaining to, but not limited to, warranty, shipping, receiving and issuing. * Coordinates mechanical work force shift assignments to ensure availability of equipment for service. * Administers and maintains records of instruction programs for safety, warranty, preventative maintenance and shop equipment. * Diagnoses existing and /or potential problems with mechanical, electrical, HVAC, communication, door system and other rolling stock components and instructs on repair resolution. * Interprets electrical schematics and engineering drawings. * Responds to scene of rail accidents and mechanical failures to coordinate with transit control center and emergency responders. * Diagnoses mechanical failure and equipment condition to restore service. * Ensures maintenance record retention plan is in compliance with FRA and OSHA requirements. * Performs other related duties as assigned or apparent. What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications) Any of the following combinations of experience in maintenance, preferably in commuter rail, electro-mechanical equipment or other heavy duty transportation maintenance and completed educational degree in transportation, engineering, business administration, business management or closely related field: + High school diploma/GED with eight (8) years of experience including one (1) year of experience in management, supervision, or lead work which could include time as a trainer or mentor. + Associate's degree with six (6) years of experience including one (1) year of experience in management, supervision, or lead work which could include time as a trainer or mentor. + Bachelor’s degree or higher with four (4) years of experience including one (1) year of experience in management, supervision, or lead work which could include time as a trainer or mentor. *Metropolitan Council Employees Only. Successful completion of any one of the following four Metropolitan Council Leadership/Supervisory training programs will substitute for lead/supervisory experience. You must attach your certificate(s) as proof of completion of the program to your application. What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job: + Knowledge of original equipment manufacturer warranties, contracts, technical specifications and administrative procedures. + Knowledge of AC/DC electrical systems, principles of analog and digital electronics, electronic control circuitry and associated mechanical, HVAC, pneumatic, hydraulic systems, testing and inspections, methods/tools, basic welding skills. + Knowledge of IEEE, FRA, AREMA, APTA, and NEC recommended maintenance practices. + Skilled in interpersonal, oral and written communication. + Skilled in problem solving and resolution skills. + Skilled at the intermediate level in Microsoft Word, Excel. + Skilled at the basic level in Microsoft PowerPoint, Access and Outlook and using the internet. + Ability to perform in-depth electro-mechanical troubleshooting and must possess universal technician skills. + Ability to structure and deliver training in-shop and classroom setting. + Ability to manage multiple responsibilities/priorities simultaneously. + Ability to understand, interpret and apply union contracts at Metro Transit. + Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional documents, professional journals, technical procedures and government regulations. + Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. + Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of customers or clients. + Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest and percentages. + Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Subject to random DOT drug tests. What your work environment would be: Work is performed in a standard office setting and in the field. This position has exposure to extreme weather conditions where there is no effective protection from the weather, inside environmental conditions where there is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperamental changes, loud noises, exposure to hazards such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, and working near moving parts, atmospheric conditions, and vibration. Some travel between primary worksite to other sites is required. This position will be on-call and may have a variable shift. Regularly required to sit for long periods, stand/walk occasionally, speak, hear normal conversation and telephone ring tones, operate a computer and other office equipment, and must have adequate close vision for reading and computer work. Must meet physical requirements mandated by FRA for locomotive engineer certification (sight, hearing, etc.). Must be able to climb a ladder, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl, reach with hands/arms frequently below chest and overhead and lift up to 80 pounds.
