In this role you will be responsible for operational oversight, strategic planning and budget preparation, direct supervision of employees, performance management, recruitment, interviewing, employee relations, employee development, productivity and efficiency, citizen, and community relations communications, assigned projects or programs and development and implementation of policies and procedures. The focus of this position is to implement relevant sections of the Environment Chapter of the Comprehensive Plan and the associated environmental provisions of the Sarasota County Code. This position primarily oversees the reviews of UDC site development plans, land-use petitions, Earthmoving Permits, and associated compliance and monitoring. This role requires technical review, analysis, permitting and compliance monitoring of development projects.Directly supervise Environmental Specialist(s) within the Unified Development Code (UDC) and Earthmoving review team.Coordinate the technical review of land development proposals and land use changes and assist with other EPD programs.Delegate work to other employees and ensure that quality control and deadlines for project completion are met.Conduct performance reviews and coach staff.Resolve technical permitting issues or code enforcement disagreements between the public and staff.Respond to inquiries from the public or other County offices.Evaluate large and small-scale development plans pursuant to the UDC to determine consistency with the Environment Chapter of the County's Comprehensive Plan.Make proper interpretations of the County's environmental requirements and can make appropriate independent decisions in implementing these requirements.Provide technical advice to permit applicants at pre-application meetings.Perform technical field inspections, confirm native habitat types, verify wetland jurisdictional lines, and required upland buffers. Confirm the presence of any threatened or endangered species.Coordinate with other departments, as well as permit applicants, other government agencies, engineers, consultants, builders, and the public on natural resource issues (e.g., Threatened and Endangered Species, protected habitat, wetlands, etc.).Review management and maintenance plans for wetland mitigation areas, littoral zones, and preservation and conservation areas.Prepare staff recommendations and permits for action by either the Board of County Commissioners or the Ordinance Administrator.

E-Work/Hybrid Work: Currently this position is eligible to e-work up to 2 days per week! After you complete your first six months, contingent on work requirements and other factors, you’ll be eligible for this fantastic benefit.

Subject to Passing Substance Screening:  This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening.  An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

About You

To thrive in this position, you must have-

A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences, Natural Sciences, Biology, or Botany.-OR- a 2-year Associate degree and four (4 ) years of experience.A minimum of one-year supervisory experience is required (lead worker or acting in a supervisory capacity may be counted)Valid state driver’s license.

About Everything Else:

Starting Pay Range: $61,152.00 - $70,000.00 based on experience.
