Manages the day to day operations of phlebotomy within laboratory medicine. Monitors the phlebotomy process, specimen processing, clerical duties, turnaround times of phlebotomy processes, and productivity.  Reviews patient satisfaction surveys and develops action plans with staff to provide exceptional customer satisfaction.  Takes necessary actions for process improvement when needed.

Qualifications

Education:

High school diploma or the equivalent is required.

Experience:

Four years’ experience in phlebotomy in a clinical laboratory, physician office, or equivalent medical experience including venipuncture, is required.Minimum one year of supervisory or leadership experience is required.

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Excellent phlebotomy skills for collection of samples on all types/ages of patients is required.Above average communication/guest relation skills are required.Above average written and verbal communication skills are required.May be required to work beyond regular business hours to meet business needs. Responsibilities Assigns daily responsibilities and monitors workflow and productivity to ensure timely completion of all tasks in areas of responsibility, to assure the most efficient turnaround time for patient blood draws.

 

Develops phlebotomy staff schedules to maintain effective operation in all areas of responsibility for all three shifts.

 

Monitors daily phlebotomy action by the use of various computer programs and logs (will call board, turn-around time reports, etc.).

 

Conducts the orientation, training and annual competencies of phlebotomy personnel. 

 

Evaluates staffing in all areas of responsibility, conducts performance appraisals, interviews and selects candidates to fill vacant positions. Applies departmental disciplinary standards as required to maintain effective operation of the department.

 

Assists with developing protocols to assure good communication between phlebotomy and clerical staff.         

 

Participates in the collection of special procedures (i.e. Legal Blood Alcohol Collections, Arterial Blood Specimens for routine blood gases, trauma cases, and stat codes).

 

Maintains confidentiality of information regarding all patients as detailed in hospital policies.

 

Ensures completion of administrative support tasks (i.e.: order entry, cancellations, etc.) when required.

 

Receives and handles complaints, reviews pertinent information, and performs or assigns additional investigation as necessary to ensure resolution.

 

Promotes and monitors timely, cost effective use of all supplies used in the performance of phlebotomy within Memorial Medical Center.

 

Maintains the Phlebotomy procedure manual.

 

Works closely with the Tech III’s, and Manager, Phlebotomy to keep all phlebotomy staff updated to all procedural modifications.

 

Promotes teamwork between outpatient, clerical and inpatient phlebotomy staff, as an organizational approach to making quality and productivity improvements in phlebotomy service.

 

Contributes to effective customer relations by assisting patients, visitors, physicians to resolve expressed concerns and by demonstrating a welcoming and helpful attitude.
