Job Summary:

Supervises the daily operations of their assigned coding team. Hires and evaluates all staff on their team.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs all supervisory activities such as interviewing, hiring, desk-level training for new employees, monitoring employee performance, addressing performance deficits through established disciplinary processes (including and up to termination), preparing and issuing employee performance evaluations, conducting and participating in team meetings, and coordinating coverage for open positions.Monitors productivity, charge lag, and volume using electronic health record reports and other tools. Identifies and prevents backlogs and other impediments to charge capture. Monitors work on a daily basis to prospectively identify problems, potential backlogs and take necessary steps to mitigate impact.Works closely with individual staff to ensure efficient and correct processing of charges. Assists staff with organizing work in process so production levels consistently meet goals. Reviews quality and accuracy of work and provides feedback to staff. Provides consistent and constructive feedback to staff to ensure high performance and staff satisfaction.In conjunction with the coding leadership team, develops, documents, and implements procedures to ensure clarity of process and facilitate training of staff.Fosters and maintains professional and effective relationships with regional operational and financial leaders. Coordinates and communicates key issues, charge status, or other information as necessary and appropriate.Serves as subject matter expert for evaluation and management and procedural coding in assigned areas. Interacts regularly with coders, physicians, and other health care practitioners to ensure common understanding of coding and documentation guidelines/principles, as well as government and commercial payer rules and regulations.Serves as subject matter resource to physicians and the information technology and coding teams regarding electronic health record templates and tools. Assists with template development and ongoing review to ensure templates facilitate streamlined workflow for physicians while also ensuring accurate code selection. Provides support to physicians as requested or deemed necessary, may be required to travel to provider.Functions as working supervisor who is able to abstract code as well as work charge and claim review work queues and coding-related denials. Serves as point of escalation and resolution of difficult coding questions and issues identified by staff and transferred into supervisor work queue.Performs other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree in business, healthcare or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience

Four years' experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.Frequent keyboard use/data entry.Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping.Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.Rare climbing.
