Supervisor - Electrical

Position Summary:

The Electrical Shop Supervisor provides cost-effective, efficient, reliable, maintenance service in preserving and upgrading the integrity of the campus facilities with minimal disruption to building occupants. Provides leadership and management of the F&CP Electrical Shop. Serves as the primary interface for University customers, anticipating customer needs and communicating and building relationships with customers at all levels ensuring proper operation and maintenance of Electrical Systems and Building Electrical Distribution Systems (within the buildings), including on-campus High Voltage Distribution Systems and Backup Power Systems.

The ideal candidate has a minimum of six years of supervisory experience successfully leading and working with a large team of Electrical staff. Has a good knowledge of proper safety procedures for working with electrical devices and systems.

This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in-person at F&CP Electrical Shop, Monday through Friday, from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.

This role is classified as an essential position, requiring on-site presence to effectively carry out its vital functions.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position. The starting salary is $30.34 an hour, with the potential for a higher rate based on qualifications and experience. *Non-exempt (hourly) positions under FLSA are eligible for overtime.

Minimum Requirements: 

Associate Degree In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted 3 or more years of experience in the electrical trade, preferably in an institutional, commercial, or industrial environment In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted Skills Advanced repair knowledge and proper use of associated tools and equipment Excellent communications skills oral and written Ability to guide and mentor others Ability to manage multiple priorities

Preferences:

College or Trade School degree Ten years of direct supervisory experience in a Maintenance, Plant Operations, Manufacturing, or other technical supervisory position.  Experience working in a team environment. Minimum of six years of supervisory experience Journeyman Electrician License and City of Houston Electrical Maintenance License, or equivalent experience Master Electrician License and both City of Houston and State of Texas Licenses Analytical skills, clear reasoning ability, and be trusted to work on his/her own Good working knowledge of transfer switches, bus ducts, and motors Able to clearly distinguish colors used on CRT screens and indicator lights IR taking and reading Card Reader Ability to build and sustain relationships with campus customers and focus on customer service A motivated self-starter with strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills Capability to fully understand sophisticated, state-of-the-art interactive systems and the analytical ability to troubleshoot problems and develop solutions Good computer skills including working with word processing software, spreadsheets, and computerized maintenance management systems Valid Texas Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment) required with no more than three moving violations or at-fault accidents within the past 36 months and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past 5 years

Essential Functions:

Provides leadership to staff members to achieve the mission statement and goals of the organization and the University Develops and maintains a safety program within the department Monitors, trains, and coordinates maintenance personnel to ensure tasks and work orders are performed in a timely manner Oversees the preventive maintenance program and establishes priorities for assigned tasks  Mentors peers and other co-workers as applicable Coordinates activities and develops a plan for materials, labor, and work order completion Meets with assigned vendors and coordinates upcoming material support for maintenance work order program Oversees vendors and work being performed to ensure deadlines are met Instructs, demonstrates, and monitors employees with the diagnoses and development of a corrective action plan to address complex technical issues Supports the Maintenance Training Program Performs all other duties as assigned

Work Conditions/Requirements

Physical Demands:

Must be able to lift loads no greater than 50 lbs. Must be able to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolding, and work around confined areas with piping and wiring obstructions, as needed, to access equipment Requires moderate to heavy physical activity, including bending, stooping, climbing, balancing, standing, and walking up to 8 hours per day Occasionally required to enter utility tunnels and confined spaces

Physical Environment:

Requires exposure to high-pressure boilers and steam piping, high voltage electricity, high noise levels, rotating, and other potentially dangerous equipment Requires work in mechanical rooms, tunnels, labs, attics, crawl spaces, non-conditioned spaces, and dusty, dirty, and wet conditions. Requires personal protective equipment such as hearing protection, safety shoes, and safety glasses

Work Hours and Travel:

After-hours work may be required or other work outside the regular schedule may be needed Available on a continuous “on-call” basis for response to problems and emergencies that affect campus operations May require periodic travel to classes, conferences, and vendor sites as needed

Essential Personnel

This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to campus, provide the essential services designated, and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency
