Job Summary/Overall Objectives
Under the general direction of the Laboratory Director, coordinates the work performed in their respective section for all hospitals in the health system. Maintains procedure manuals and implements new procedures system wide according to the guidelines of the regulatory agencies. Supervises and participates in the evaluation of technical staff. Resolves equipment and procedure problems with service and technical representatives. Ensures an appropriate inventory of reagents and supplies. Accountable to serve as a technical/laboratory role model and resource in lab section. Supervises the activities of employees in a laboratory section ensuring timely, quality results and reports in compliance with all regulatory agencies and established policies and procedures. Maintains current knowledge in technological advancements in specific laboratory discipline that may be incorporated into operations of that area. Responsible for the standardization of procedures and cross training of staff across the system.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Align department with strategy map and continually work to implement drivers in support of Independence Health System’s mission and vision. Act promptly to resolve problems and initiate better ways of doing things by acting as a catalyst for change. Establish and maintain a safe working environment and assure staff complies with safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines. Equitably apply policies and procedures by issuing corrective action in a fair and consistent manner. Assess customer’s needs, exceed customer expectations, and consider customers in decision making to improve customer satisfaction. Act on most urgent tasks, leverage available resources, review own workload, implement workable systems, and provide clear direction. This position has direct supervisory responsibilities and serves as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department. Management responsibilities include hiring, coaching, skills development, recognition and rewards, staff productivity and performance management. Assists technologists and technicians within the department. Serves as an "expert" for questions and concerns of staff on analytical processes within department. Performs testing within the department. Coordinates training of new employees within the department Assists with workflow and workflow changes. Utilizing LEAN tools, review current workflow and streamline processes. Lead staff, through employee engagement, by assisting manager and system supervisors. Lead daily meetings in absence of manager. Participate in team projects throughout the laboratory (i.e. quality, 5S, etc.) Participate in cross functional teams throughout the laboratory, and throughout the system if available. Demonstrate proficiency in lab information systems. understand the basic maintenance functions of the LIS Manage worksheets and calculations, assisting the LIS team with expertise on testing and reporting structures. Help implement changes, for example, auto verification, instrument interfaces, etc. Maintains credentials/certification with American Society of Clinical Pathologists Essential Functions Other duties as assigned.
Competency and Experience [Knowledge, Skills and Abilities]
Required Qualifications/Experience
Associate degree or higher from an accredited MT, MLT or clinical laboratory science program. Zero (0) to Two (2) years supervisory/management experience in functional area. Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability of functional area. Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience. Functional Skills on PC and Related Software (Microsoft Office) Proficiency in the use of Excel Spreadsheets, PowerPoint, and various software programs Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Outlook. Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments. Speaking skills to instruct on theory, principles and methods. Ability to apply statistical principles to determine reliability and validity of test, normal curves and analysis of variance in correlation techniques. Possesses analytical problem-solving skills using sound judgment. Interprets an extensive variety of technical diagnoses. Independent critical thinking and decision-making ability. Knowledge of laboratory regulations and practices
Preferred Qualifications/Experience
Bachelor’s Degree or higher preferred.
License, Certification & Clearances
Registry eligible for MLS (ASCP). MLT (ASCP) or MT (ASCP) or HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) preferred. American Society of clinical Pathologist Specialty Certification or equivalent certification in the discipline that they supervise. Act 34-PA Criminal Record Check from the PA State Police system.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.). Travel may be expected locally between System locations.
