Key Responsibilities
Responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance in assigned sections, including preparation and participation in all inspections e.g, College of American Pathologists (CAP), American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), Maryland Department of Health (MDH), etc. Participates in any relevant hospital inspection, e.g., The Joint Commission.Performs human resource management functions, including hiring, firing, disciplinary actions, competency assessments, recognition, and performance appraisals. Facilitates continuing education.Ensures staff compliance with department and system attendance policies and ensures staff compliance with UMMS annual training and employee health requirements. Maintains adequate and appropriate inventories of all supplies required to perform a procedure without delays and shortages and within an acceptable department budget. Plans cost-effective utilization of human and material resources consistent with cost-containment, productivity, and patient care goals.Ensures all reports, manuals, budgets, policies, and procedures are maintained and updated in accordance with hospital and regulatory agency policies.Monitors quality control and instrument function and reviews maintenance documentation for identification of trends in instrument malfunction. Decides appropriate course of action when primary procedures are not functioning to avoid unnecessary testing delays.Enforces, reviews and revises laboratory policies and procedures to improve efficiency, productivity, and quality of the department(s).Acts as an informational resource for nursing, physicians, co-workers and department personnel with technical questions and test interpretations or directs questions to appropriate sources. QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
Education: Associate's degree in the area of specialization (medical technology, biology, chemistry, histotechnology, cytotechnology, or related sciences), required; or completion of a military laboratory technician program with relevant experience required; or completion of a histotechnology certification program. ASCP or equivalent preferred.
Experience: Minimum of five years of clinical laboratory experience in the area of specialization required.
