Summary This Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist position will be responsible for coordination and performance of the Diagnostic Section of the Radiology Service. This section includes the radiographic modalities of general diagnostic, fluoroscopic, bone density, mammography, and MRI modalities and other Radiology sections as needed. The Supervisory DRT works under the general direction of the Chief Technologist and the Chief of Radiology Service. Responsibilities This Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist position will be responsible for coordination and performance of the Computed Tomography (CT) section, the Angiography/Interventional Radiology (IR) section, the Ultrasound Section and other Radiology sections as needed. The Supervisory DRT Special Procedures works under the general direction of the Chief Technologist and the Chief of Radiology Service, and assists, oversees, plans and develops activities in the CT, IR, U/S and other imaging sections programs. These specialty sections are part of the Imaging Service's commitment to optimum patient care and utilizes a program that maintains and monitors daily quality control and assures the economically efficient performance of all activities. The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: The Supervisory DRT Diagnostic is the first line supervisor to the GS-647-5, 6, 7 and 8 general diagnostic staff technologists, the GS-647-9 mammography/DEXA staff technologists, the GS-10 Magnetic Resonance Imaging Supervisor, and the GS-647-9 Clinical Coordinator for the affiliated student technologist programs. And a second line supervisor for GS-9 Magnetic Resonance Imaging staff. The incumbent assists the Chief Technologist in formulating and implementing administrative and operational policies and procedures for the Imaging Service in general and specifically for their areas of responsibility in the Diagnostic section. The Supervisory DRT Diagnostic works independently when performing administrative and technical assignments in their areas of responsibility and is expected to function with initiative and independent judgment in their sphere of responsibilities. Functions as the assistant to the Chief Technologist in their areas of responsibility to assure that the annual mandatory hospital training is completed, and that applicable licensures, Professional Certification, Continuing Education, ACLS, CPR and IV certifications are maintained, as required by the licensing bodies, JCAHO, and the facility. Inventory Control: Ensures that adequate quantities of supplies are available to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering, receipt and inventory control. Assures that Diagnostic procedure rooms are always stocked with necessary supplies with special attention to emergent equipment and supplies. Technologist Oversight/Scheduling: Provides technical oversight of personnel and workload to provide optimal patient care daily. Provides feedback to Chief Technologist on technical aspects of work. Monitors and reports on the status of work and adjusts to accomplish the workload. Staff Training: Trains or arranges training for new technologists in Diagnostic section. Develops formal orientation, training, and evaluation programs. Recommends, coordinates, and evaluates new or modified procedures/protocols. Equipment Maintenance/Repair: Coordinates the repair and installation of Diagnostic equipment. Serves as the liaison between Radiology and Biomedical Engineering and repair contractors. Tracks and maintains records of repair histories and vendor performance. Performs radiographic exams of the head, spine (including myelography), chest, abdomen (including exams of GI tract, gallbladder, urinary system, and fistula) and extremities (including arthrography). These are achieved by using diagnostic x-ray equipment such as fluoroscopic, c-arm, portable units, and general diagnostic digital units. Qualifications BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently. Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). Preferred Experience/Qualifications: 5 years experience in General Radiology and experience with at least one special modality preferred. Minimum 3 years of experience supervising in Radiology highly preferred. Experience with coaching, counseling, and recognition with individuals in dedicated imaging modalities. Experience in interacting with Bargaining units and time tracking systems. Highly preferred to have fluent skills in CPRS, EI PACS, and VISTA. Must have good time management, organizational, and prioritization skills. Detail Oriented Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements above, candidates must meet the following grade requirements. GS-11 Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: 1. Knowledge of overall radiology department operations, and the ability to judge effectiveness of the operation. 2. Ability to monitor and evaluate subordinate supervisor's performance. 3. Ability to formulate plans, delegate authority, and follow up on delegated tasks. 4. Knowledge of new and recent developments in the filed. Assignment. This position serves as a liaison for the Office of Information and Technology (OI&T), Biomedical Engineering staff and clinical users to ensure the PACS system is configured to optimize imaging including distribution capabilities; develops methods and programs to evaluate, monitor and maintain digital imaging and voice recognition systems; serves as team leader in planning, developing, and instructing users in the operation of PACS network elements, the integration of these with related systems, and recommends corresponding upgrades. This position researches and or/analyzes problems, issues, or program requirements supporting the functions of a digital imaging system; performs complex system administrator functions such as: oversight of RIS (Hospital Information System/Radiology Information System) links necessary to interface with the HIS (Hospital Information System), Application Entity (AE) titles, individual and user group creation, and access management, system filters, exam code dictionaries, DICOM configuration testing, hanging protocols, voice file exchange, and other duties associated with this position. The incumbent ensures compliance with all national and VA information and security requirements, including archiving of images to VistA imaging. This position may independently function as a DRT, which may include complex modality such as CT, MR, mammography, ultrasound, and IR. Physical Requirements: DRT's work requires long periods of standing, walking, and sedentary duties up to 8 hours. There is repeated bending, pushing / pulling, reaching above shoulders, use of both hands (hands and fingers), twisting and carrying of moderately heavy articles weighing from 15-44 pounds such as multiple cassettes, grids, as well as wearing lead aprons. Movement of moderately heavy equipment is generally power assisted such as portable machines. Positioning of patients who are disabled may require considerable effort and working in awkward positions. Heavy lifting of incapacitated patients is done only with help of other employees and devices provided by the Radiology Section. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
