Supervisory Recreation Specialist
Summary This position will be assigned to the JBSA Lackland Arnold Hall Community Center. This is a Regular - Full Time category position with guaranteed 35 hours per week and may work up to 40 hours per week. Work schedule varies based on facility needs and includes weekends and/or holidays. Employees appointed to regular category positions are eligible for benefits. Responsibilities Plans and administers a diversified recreation program for the Arnold Hall Community Center by providing professional expertise in developing, implementing, and conducting community center programs for active duty military, retirees, and DoD civilians and their families. Conducts overall management of the Information, Tickets, and Travel (ITT) Office and the General Store. Directs, coordinates, and oversees work through subordinate supervisors of ITT and General Store. Offers programs in personal and professional development, performing arts, leisure and recreation, and family life skills. Programs may be offered as self-directed activities, instructional classes, special interest clubs, special events, community-wide events, and co-sponsored events designed to meet the recreation and leisure needs of the personnel eligible to use the facilities. Plans and coordinates the recurring and non-recurring activities, special events, i.e. games, dances, tournaments, contests, parties, lectures, and family play groups, so as to maximize the use of the facilities, services, and other resources consistent with the Air Force mission. Devises, improves, and adapts these various activities to the wide range of participant interests, needs, and trends and to meet the limitations of funds, facilities, equipment, and available volunteer and other staff support. Provides oversight and promotes special emphasis programs, Air Force Trademark events, community center theater program, talent contests, TOPS IN BLUE productions, and Congressional Award Program. Solicits volunteer services for activities and provides required orientation, training, and management. Acts as a liaison between the program and base agencies and off-base agencies. Supervises assigned personnel. Assigns and reviews subordinate's work and provides instruction and guidance as required. Approves or disapproves leave requests. Interview and selects employees for vacancies. Prepares drafts of position descriptions, counsels employees, establishes performance standards and evaluates employee performance. Prepares requests and justifications for awards, reassignments, promotions, etc. Maintains assigned facilities in a clean and safe manner; routinely conducts self-inspections, ensuring facility is free from safety, fire, and public health discrepancies. Reports any discrepancies to CES and monitors progress. Makes suggestions for improvements for alterations to the facilities for future use. Maintains inventory records and levels of resale merchandise. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifying Experience: Three years progressively responsible administrative, professional, technical, or other work which has provided general knowledge of management principles and practices demonstrating the ability to carry out continuing projects or programs. In addition, applicant must have 2 1/2 years specialized experience that demonstrates the ability to apply the principles of one or more specialty areas of recreation and leisure. Experience which demonstrated the ability to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data, and recognize solutions, plan and organize work, and communicate effectively orally and in writing. Work requires physical exertion and applicant must be able to lift 15-30 lbs. A Bachelors Degree in Recreation may be substituted for three years basic experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of basic budget preparation as it applies to operating and capital expenditure budgets. 2. Skilled in the use of automation software and related equipment. 3. Knowledge of programming and hospitality. 4. This position does allow for education substitution. A Bachelors Degree in Recreation may be substituted for three years basic experience. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
