WORK LOCATION & TRAVEL

This position will be in either Atlanta, GA or Birmingham, AL This position will require a mix of field and office work.  Field work can include site visits to suppliers’ shops and various work locations. Ability to travel approximately 50% of the time, including domestic and international. If you love travel and manufacturing this could be a great career for you.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Supplier Quality team maintains expertise in electrical and mechanical manufacturing, welding, coating, surveillance and inspection, and the practical use of quality systems. As the Supplier Quality Supervisor, you will be responsible for leading and conducting the Supplier Quality shop surveillance program for Technical Shared Services (TSS).  This includes providing vision, strategic planning, and implementation of Supplier Quality policies, standards, and procedures.  This position will support ongoing and future projects including Combined and Simple Cycle, Solar, Battery Storage, and Hydo Power projects. Additionally, the Supplier Quality Supervisor will support Transmission’s Power Delivery Grid Modernization/Hardening and the included material and equipment.

In this role you will interface with customers, suppliers, and management to ensure the quality of materials and their adherence to Southern Company specifications. This includes visiting suppliers, tracking customer issues, ensuring compliance to corrective actions, and performing surveillances and inspections. You will also be the focal point for communicating supplier corrective actions back to Engineering and Procurement teams.

Primary Responsibilities:

Lead Supplier Quality using a proactive approach to improving quality through cross functional teams. Respond to quality issues and communicate with external suppliers and internal customers. Provide leadership and mentor Supplier Quality Engineers and Coordinators as they perform shop surveillances and inspections. Monitor supplier quality performance and form partnerships to drive continuous improvement. Manage the maintenance of the Supplier Database. Evaluate risk and provide recommendations to internal customers on potential suppliers prior to award. Oversee the Supplier Quality team’s participation in continual education efforts. Conduct capability assessments and process validations to support supplier selection activities. Interface with Engineering and Procurement to ensure suppliers meet Southern Company quality standards. Track supplier quality concerns from internal customers and conduct follow-through for timely resolutions. Perform inspections and determine acceptability of various equipment and material such as transmission line and substation products (poles, hardware, conductor, etc.), structural steel, transformers, steam turbines, hydro turbines, gas turbines, fans, motors and pumps, and various other power delivery and generation equipment. Review suppliers’ Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs). Hire and manage 3rd party inspectors to conduct inspections at supplier facilities. Review Root Cause Analysis and Corrective Actions for defective materials and make recommendations as needed. Analyze non-conformance trends to evaluate effectiveness of corrective actions. Participate in or lead problem solving teams as assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

BS in Engineering, Construction Management, or related 4-year technical degree is preferred. 

Experience & Skills:

Experience in manufacturing and/or fabricating required. 4+ years of experience working directly in a supplier quality or manufacturing role is required. Experience directly or indirectly managing/supervising employees is strongly preferred. Experience interfacing with customers and suppliers. Experience developing and delivering presentations to management. Previous experience with ISO 9001 / AS9100 a plus. Skilled in MS Office including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.

Maintain adherence to all safety guidelines. Must be able to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications. Possess strong interpersonal skills with an ability to work in a team environment, establishing partnerships both internally and externally.  Strong problem-solving skills. Ability to pivot direction with changing customer needs.
