Job Objectives:
The Safety Program Officer directs and implements facility safety programs in accordance with state, federal, and regulatory standards for Methodist Medical Center and assists the engineering manager in supervising and directing work activities engaged in maintenance of building and utilities.Serves as safety program officer and manages TJC environment of care chapters including life safety and emergency management. Maintains and/or develops policies and procedures for safety and engineering. Oversees in-house construction projects Maintains supply inventory.

Responsibilities
+ Serves as Safety Consultant in proper operation of the Facility Fire Alarm and Access Control Systems.
+ Develop and facilitate safety training programs, including orientation and continuing education.
+ Chairs and directs efforts of Safety Committee.
+ Coordinate safety information with committee functions and staff.
+ Develops, implements, and manages life safety management programs per Joint Commission standards.
+ Develops, implements, and manages emergency preparedness programs per Joint Commission standards.
+ Develops, implements, and manages hazardous materials management program per Joint Commission standards, local, state, and federal guidelines.
+ Develops, implements, and maintains policies and procedures per the Joint Commission guidelines and regulatory standards.
+ Serves as a Safety Consultant in directing and implementing appropriate Safety Programs for Methodist Medical Affiliates and Covenant Health.
+ Performs safety inspections per state and federal guidelines and prepares written documentation of inspections.
+ Serves as Fleet Safety Officer for Methodist Medical Center.
+ Maintains documentation of regulatory compliance, policies and procedures, meeting minutes, safety investigations, and all forms of correspondence.
+ Attends Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) meetings and serves on the Knox East Tennessee (KET) Healthcare Coalition.
+ Assists with in-house construction project management and oversight.
+ Recommends improvements for physical plant and engineering operations.
+ Maintains engineering supply inventory and orders repair materials as necessary.
+ Remains mentally alert and maintains concentration with attention to detail for prolonged periods, at times under stress. Maintains adaptability, flexibility, initiative, persistence, and efficiency of time management and action.
+ Does not pose a direct threat to health or safety of self or others. Provides safe, efficient, competent care to population assigned. Meets MMC Environment of Care Standards.
+ Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Education:
None specified; will accept any combination of formal education and/or prior work experience sufficient to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skill and ability needed to perform the essential tasks of the job, typically such as would be equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree. Preference may be given to individuals possessing a Bachelor’s degree in a directly-related field from an accredited college or university.
Minimum Experience:
Must understand regulatory standards relating to health and environmental needs per NFPA and the Life Safety Code. Excellent communication skills necessary to interact with all levels of hospital staff. Experience in maintenance work preferred. Prior management training and/or supervisor experience preferred. Leadership experience preferred.
