Supv Research Laboratory Operations

Summary:

The Research Laboratory Operations Supervisor reports to the Director of the Lifespan Clinical Research Center. This individual is responsible for effectively managing planning and implementing all operations of the Lifespan CRC Laboratory and Biobank to maximize usefulness and quality including: safety training developing SOPs QA/QC processes for multiple ongoing projects in a rapidly changing research environment; overseeing the collection processing storage retrieval and transfer of specimens according to best practices and strict adherence to all applicable policies and regulations. Additional duties include: holding project team meetings; preparing written documents; and maintaining overall documentation of the functioning of the laboratory and biobank to include files pertaining to sample tracking projects shipping logs and communication/coordination with other researchers or laboratories. The  Research Laboratory Operations Supervisor is responsible for managing the administrative financial and operational aspects of the laboratory. Works closely with Principle Investigators and departments to ensure they are receiving sufficient support to achieve study objectives. Provides supervision to laboratory staff  

 

Responsibilities:

Following established procedures prepares and sets up laboratory systems daily.

Verifies specimen data entry accuracy and communicates with external sites or internal staff to resolve discrepancies.

Reviews associated specimen submission documentation to enter data into an electronic tracking system.

Reviews investigators� protocols for information related to specimen and banking activities to ensure that internal documents and informatics systems are updated as needed for internal staff to use.

May also participate in editing protocols with external clients/sponsors.

Organizes and coordinates projects with external clients collecting appropriate documents and preparing biospecimens and related data for shipment to research investigators. 

Understands and implements all quality control processes including maintaining staff certifications required for job performance and equipment maintenance.

Performs specimen processing and handling to prepare the specimens for long-term storage or distribution; ships and/or returns specimens to external sites per IATA specifications.

Communicates respectfully with coworkers staff patients parents and clients. 

Continuously strives to provide customer service in an efficient and effective manner to assure customer satisfaction and quality specimen handling.

Contributes to process development/improvement within the department including participating in quality assurance continuing education programs department meetings and special projects as assigned.

Demonstrates the ability to make determinations regarding course of action and alternatives by addressing problems using resolutions and advanced troubleshooting skills. 

Able to resolve technical computer and customer service problems within the lab section. 

Performs in-depth problem solving and serves as a resource for others in department. 

Demonstrates the initiative and ability to provide useful feedback in a professional manner. 

Trains new employees.

Wears appropriate personal protective equipment as designated by lab area.

Maintains a clean working area and performs general laboratory maintenance.

Reports spills and hazardous situations immediately and acts appropriately.

Follows established guidelines for disclosure of patient information.

Provides assistance to research investigators by explaining instrumentation capabilities parameters and limitations.

Additionally may communicate procedures of specimen preparation specific to procedures to be run.

Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and instrumentation replacement parts.

Prepares purchase requests for appropriate authorizations as necessary.

Maintains regular contact with other laboratory areas/sections and other hospital departments in communicating testing data and procedures.

Oversee shared laboratory space including specimen management of storage of study specimens from several studies as well as training of all personnel that will use the laboratory.

Establishes manages and retains requests for laboratory transportation processing shipping and storage including providing consultations presentations advertising and meetings with PIs and staff for new and existing studies.

Manage cost center budget invoice for services and track payments.

Creates and maintains Biospecimen Management in Clinical Trials Management System for all supported studies.

 

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Knowledge normally obtained through completion of a Bachelor�s Degree in biology biochemistry cell biology or related scientific field.

Professional level of knowledge in biology cell biology biochemistry or related field to provide theoretical background in order to effectively understand and perform testing procedures.

Analytical ability to evaluate integrity and quality of data.

Outstanding administrative/organizational skills in order to direct operation of complex laboratory section ensuring procedures are efficiently performed and quality control followed.

A high degree of technical expertise of specific procedures equipment and controls in order to function as resource to subordinate employees.

Interpersonal skills to interact and communicate with all levels of Hospital Staff primarily research investigators and various external sources to effectively provide and obtain information regarding procedures to be done and explanation of results.

EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor�s degree in biology biochemistry cell biology or related scientific field. 5 years of progressive experience in a laboratory setting. Understanding of Good Clinical Practice guidelines; Prior experience as a Project Coordinator or laboratory professional within a biobank/biorepository is preferred.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Oversees the staff responsible for day to day operations within the department. Interview select train and assign work to employees; evaluate employee performance and recommend salary adjustments. Counsel employees and when necessary recommend discipline and discharge of subordinate personnel when appropriate. Resolves employee related issues and concerns as they arise. Ensures annual development plan for each employee is established. Provides direction on departmental educational plan providing feedback as needed and sets an example by being a role model for department staff.
