Supv Specimen Receiving

Summary:
The Supervisor Specimen Receiving reports to the Pathology Manager. Is responsible for the supervision of Specimen Receiving. Provides oversight and follow-up on issues of blood sample collection test orders and phlebotomy labeling. Provides information for routine inquiries on status of inpatient and outpatient laboratory work.

Responsibilities:
Interviews schedules trains evaluates and makes recommendations for personnel actions. May carry out corrective action with personnel following consultation with Pathology Manager. Conducts periodic performance evaluations recommends personnel actions. Acts as resource for staff; conducts periodic individual and/or group staff meetings. Prepares and submits payroll provides and maintains subordinate staff development plans develops standards for subordinate staff performance.



Trains new laboratory service staff to include registration coding and order entry as well as instruction on the query tool to resolve customer questions.



Reviews evaluates and recommends changes in policies and procedures for specimen receiving. Implements approved changes. Develops and maintains policy and procedure manuals for section.



Monitors and evaluates quality of work performed by specimen receiving staff. Coordinates activities of order entry staff in regards to specific requirements of various laboratory sections and clinical areas.



Coordinates activities of specimen receiving area to include customer service specimen test results charges coding distribution of reports and other functions.



Monitors the accuracy of the registrations performed.



Audits all laboratory charges in accordance with established procedures.



Ensures compliance with current laboratory standards for section as promulgated by College of American Pathologists The Joint Commission and other regulatory agencies as delegated by the Pathologist-in-Chief and Hospital administration.



Reviews evaluates and recommends new equipment and supplies. Maintains adequate inventory of supplies at all times.



Responsible for the registration and coding entry of samples. Trains new employees in data entry procedures.



Maintains quality assurance safety environmental and infection control in accordance with established Hospital department policies procedures and objectives.



Performs other related duties as required.

Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Associates Degree in General Studies or equivalent work experience with general familiarity with Clinical Laboratory testing and operations.



EXPERIENCE:

Three years experience including one-year lead or supervisory responsibility.



Basic computer skills in and knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications including Microsoft Word Excel and Access. Ability to think analytically.



WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Healthcare environment such as acute care hospital.



Works with medical equipment.



Any potential hazards are minimized or nullified by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions including use safety equipment and protective clothing.



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Direct supervision of up to 10 FTEs.
